  1. Anybody have advice on how to take the ECU out? Ive got the glove box out and the lower bracket nut out but the upper bracket and nut are burried way up there. Help! Yo
  2. The ECU brackett bolts are burried behind the CD changer. Do I have to remove it to get to the upper bracket bolts? Perhaps LS400bob can help since he has done it before. thanks yo
  3. I called several stereo shops all of which said that there is no code unless the previous owner programmed one in. The dealer said today that it is possible to unlock the unit if the car is brought in. The stereo shops said the same. I am taking the ECU out right now but it is really hard to get the ECU brackett out as the bolts are behind the CD changer. Harder than I imagined. Yo
  4. Hi I recently purchased a 95 LS400. The Lexus dealer told me that the Nakamichi unit is relatively new out of another vehicle. It works great. I am having the engine ecu rebuilt and was advised that I may need the security code if the ecu was replaced or battery was removed. I have no manuals and the owner's manual doesn't mention it. How do I figure the code out? How do I set it to what I want? Do I even need to be concerned? I recently removed the battery, and the code was not necessary. thanks Yo
  5. I wrote the forum some time ago about my 95 LS which has the well known problem of stalling after long freeway drives and also feeling jerky around 45MPH and on cold engine low speed driving. Lexus of Marin who just sold me the car took it in in good faith and loaned me a 2005 RX for a month but could not reproduce the stalling which would give them enough reason to replace the ECU for me. It has not stalled since, but is very jerky off throttle. Auto and Truck Electronics said they could fix the problem but recommended I find out the Nakamichi Stereo code before disconnecting the ECU or battery. My question is for those who have removed the ECUs in their 95's and 96 LS's. IS THE CODE FOR THE STEREO NECESSARY IN THE REMOVAL OF THE ECU? Are there any special precautions besides first disconnecting the battery before removing the ECU to ship to FLORIDA? Thanks everyone Yo
  6. Hi, I have similar problems with my 95 LS 103k mi. around 70mph it has a strange dull vibration. I just bought the car and it came with brand new yokohama tires. I rebalanced the tires with the special high speed balancer and weights that go on the inside of the rim but to no improvement. A similar problem occured on my 90LS after I bought those inexpensive V rated Yokohama A series tires. I have since only put Michelin MXV on my 90 LS even though they cost a lot and have not had the vibration until it was time to change the engine and trans mounts which then solved the vibration problem again. I am contemplating these changes on my 95 as well but they all cost money and I am poor right now. Yo
  7. You need to change the stabilizer bar bushings. I changed mine and they made a huge difference. you will notice the susp will also be quieter and creamier. Also think about the upper a arm bushings. Actually, I changed everything up front on my car, but found those two items to be the only things that made a difference. good luck Yo
  8. Need more details. Have you taken the wheel off to see any pathology? Yo
  9. Sounds like the starter solenoid. I have changed one on a 90 LS. It worked just like yours for months. I would just keep turning the key and it would catch eventually and turn on. One day it never caught so I did the job. Very difficult because of the clearance in the back of the engine to remove the bolts holding the starter. As far as the Toy/Lexus dealer rebuild, I think it is the best. I would not but any old rebuild or attempt to rebuild it myself or worse just change the plunger. It is not worth it. Just change the whole starter with dealer parts because trust me, you dont ever want to have to re-do the job anytime soon. Good luck. There are threads that pictorally show you exactly how to remove the starter bolts. Yo.
  10. I used to drive a 90LS with air suspension. Now I have a 95 with springs. The ride is worth the headache of blown struts every 8-10 years if your central unit is working. The rear air struts can be changed by removing the rear seat, the rear deck and the roof pillar trim. If memory serves me right I took the trunk trim off to disconnect the air lines and then removed the struts. It was a lot of fun and bonding. Feel smart keep the air. This is my opinion. Yo
  11. make sure it is the strut cushion that is causing the noise or problem because it was not the source of noise for me. I found out after changing it. The weak points on that suspension are the upper A arms and the stabilizer bar (anti-roll bar)bushings that tack it to the frame of the car. Yo
  12. The antenna not so embarrasing. it is smart and adjusts height to different radio station frequencies for best reception. Yo
  13. Are you sure you need a valve adjustment. I thought I did for a long time, but when I checked with a feeler gauge, there was no room between the cam and shim on any of the cylinders with the cam at the proper (not pushing on shim)position. Yo
  14. Thank you all, Took it to Lexus of Marin. Got great service. They identified it as the ECU problem which there is a service bulletin out for. They gave me a loaner for a week (2005RX). I am waiting right now. Please forgive my smart mouthed brother. He's quite young. Yo Yo Yo
  15. Late reply, and whatever was inevitable must have happened, but I had a fan bearing problem on my 90LS. the bearing was shot and the fan was waivering on an unstable grinding axis ready to seize and fall off. Hope yours didn't. Am I right? was this the problem? Yo
  16. I had a 90 with 150kmi on it until i figured out the source of the pulsating braking vibration. It is not the rotors. It is the rear carrier bushing. Jack up the rear of the car with the wheels free. take the wheel off and get a 17mm(if memory serves me right) and grasp one of the bolts that holds the caliper to the hub. Move it as if you are tightening or loosening the bolt and you will see that one of the bushings on the arm that goes from the chassis backwards to the hub will have play. There are replacement bushings out there. but you will have to push the old one out with a press or something. Otherwise just buy the whole suspension arm and replace it. everything will be all good. Yo
  17. Blake19 Just wondering if yours had or has same problem. Yo
  18. Hi, First time on the forum. Just got 1995 LS400 from Lexus of Marin. 100K miles. Dealer service records every 5k mi since new documented. Car stalls or has really low idle around 300-400 after prolonged freeway driving. It starts up right away after putting it in neutral and drives perfectly fine. I have found postings that suggest it is the ECU. I am wondering if LEXUS is offered a recall or any special program so I don't have to eat the whole bill if it is indeed the ECU which it sounds like it is. On a side note, I am going to change the plugs, wires, cap, rotor and both coils because I feel the car miss occasionally in idle. I can live with the problem, but would like the car to run perfectly since everything else works perfectly fine. The dealer gave me 100 mile/30 day "major mechanical" warranty. but I don't think that the Major Mechanical clause includes ECU, or at least the dealership will give me a hard time about it. Will appreciate any advice. Yo
