my 02 owners manual also says premium fuel (Octane Rating of 91) is preferred but lessor grades are acceptable. I have been running 89 for the last two tankfuls and haven't had any knocking......YET.

I must note the language is tricky. They say 91 is preferred, not required. I believe if premium unleaded fuel is mandatory, then there would be a sticker on the dash board near the fuel gauge say "USE PREMIUM UNLEADED FUEL ONLY" or something like that.
