TexasLS Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 I just bought a 1994 LS400 with 48,000 miles and neither of the electric side-view mirrors are working. I don't have any other electrical issues, so I don't think it is a fuse problem. Any suggestions? -Reid
LinuxFan Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 I really hate to say this but I must since the common theme of this site is to try the easy/simple/cheap thing first. Here goes... Have you tried the button/switch on the mirror control button? If it is in the middle then it will not move the outside mirrors.
TexasLS Posted April 20, 2004 Author Posted April 20, 2004 Ha ha....thanks LinuxFan, but I have tried that. :chairshot: Which fuse is the mirror control on? -Reid
TexasLS Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 Does anyone have any other suggestions?? Could the switch be bad? I doubt it is the motor, because BOTH aren't working. Does anyone know which fuse it is on? -Reid
UCF3 Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 unfortunately, I don't have the electrical book. Why don't you start with the fuse box on the drivers side. go through them and look for a broken one. If non of them are, you may need to troubleshoot.
TexasLS Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 Thank you for your quick response. I just checked all of the fuses on the driver's side. All seem to be fine. Any troubleshooting ideas? -Reid
ROYT Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 Hi! The outside mirrors have two fuses depending on if you have 'memory mirrors' [like the seats] or not. They are controlled by the DOME fuse [engine bay] or RADIO NO 2 fuse [bottom of steering column area]. If your tilt stering works go for the # 2 fuse. If still no good they may be memory mirrors and the ECU is behind the glove compartment. [Or a break in the wire after # 2 fuse.] Hope this helps!
TexasLS Posted April 25, 2004 Author Posted April 25, 2004 Royt, thanks for the reply. My tilt steering works fine. I will check the fuses again and then move to the ECU behind the glove compartment. If I buy a used ECU, does it have to be from the same year? Would a 1991 LS ECU work and how would I know if they have memory mirrors? And what would be a reasonable cost for a used part? Thanks. -Reid
ROYT Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 I should have written if your 'tilt steering MEMORY setting' works OK go for the # 2 fuse. The 'memory' mirrors are linked to the Tilt and Telescopic ECU,mirror switch, each mirror motor and ground. Without memory the mirror switch is supplied with current from the RADIO # 2 FUSE. Not sure if part numbers are the same for series 1 LS [up to November 1992 in the UK.] and series 2 [Nov. '92 on.] If the fuse is OK, before you source a replacement ECU, make sure you have got one.!! Take out the glove compartment [not too bad a job] and have a look. Keep away from the air bag cable[yellow] and electrics while you are in there. Cannot help on prices, Lexus parts cost an arm and a leg over here. Some of our LOC members order parts from the US 'cos they are cheaper! You will have better chance than me for a junked LS [you have more!], you might find a good ECU that way. regards Roy
TexasLS Posted April 25, 2004 Author Posted April 25, 2004 Roy, so your saying that if I have an ECU in the glove compartment, then an ECU from a 1991 should work on my 1994? And if I don't, then I have other problems. Where can find glove compartment removal instructions? Also, what are some good general LS Do-it-yourself websites? -Reid
ROYT Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 You will see flat round caps inside the front edge of the glove compartment, these pry out and I think maybe some screws near the support hinge. Cannot remember exactly I looked in mine 2 years ago. ... There is lots of info on your US club site, look through some of the old posts, there is a search facility as well. Try these sites for a start. if I find any more info on the glove box I'll send it on. http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalLexusLS400str1.htm http://www.pearsonimaging.com/LS/tutorials.html cheers... ;)
TexasLS Posted April 26, 2004 Author Posted April 26, 2004 Royt, the websites were a big help. Thank you very much. -Reid
