Glove Box Failure

2006 Lexus 400h:
The key works in the lock and the handle pops when unlocked, but the cover won't open, intermittently, but most of the time. Lexus will only sell the complete unit at a cost of US$945 plus labor, whereas it looks like the only thing to replace is the lock mechanism which shows some injury to the plastic where the metal post moves to. Anybody got a lead on where to buy just the lock?

With the lock out, you can see the metal rod that should work the release. Should that be operable when the lock is removed?

Perhaps the damaged piece can be reverse-engineered? Do you have any photos that we can see?

You could probably get the whole assy from a used auto parts yard for $2 and replace the parts in yours.
