for the water pump and timing belt 2nd gen http://www.lextreme.com/timing.htm

never put a starter on one of these.

thanks for that site, its the same site i got the starter tutorial from. but do i have to do all that to just get the water pump out? because i do not need to change the timing belt.

The short answer is Yes. You DO have to undo the timing belt to get the water pump out. You can reuse the timing belt if you like but if you go to all that trouble, you might as well just replace the TB at the same time. Not a trivial job. It is fairly involved.

Sorry. Lexus was kind enough to bury the water pump behind the timing belt. Its a timing belt job plus some in terms of effort. Unless your timing belt is very new you probably should replace it while you are in there.

I just done one of my 97's a couple of months ago, and YES you will want to do it all at the same time, if you pay someone or do it yourself, lot of work and lot of time.

my parts came from:

http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/page247.html

everything fit perfect, and the car runs fantastic.

NO LEAKS, NO ISSUES.
