desperado2
Hi, Recently got a 99 Es300 with 130K miles on it. Was running fine for a week. Started having stall problems when switched to reverse mode or drive mode after starting the car, but most of the times it happens in reverse, drive mode seems fine. Took it to the dealer and he said there is a leak in the hose so its most probably a vac leak, will changing the hose tomorrow and hopefully will be fine. But if it was the hose leak then shouldn't the stall happen for both drive and reverse mode? I don't why it happens most of the times only in reverse mode any specific reasons ? I hope its not any other problem with the transmission or something ? can somebody help me out ... thanks edmund
George_Jetson
What is the idle rpm, in both park. drive, and reverse?
camlex
depends on direction of engine move and leak location. Since dealer already knows, you will be fine.

desperado2
Hello Just went took the car from the lexus dealer, they replaced the hoses and it still stalls George I checked the RPM's the idel is around 1000; D - 750 and reverse around 500 (when it doesnt stall), also the rpm keeps surging to 2500 and drops to 1250 when driving at 20 mph.. they said the trans torque conveter clutch doesnt engage or disengage at times and they can replace only the entire trans at 3800 :( ... so should replace the full one or should I take it to a local transmission shop .. will they be able to fix the problem ??? ... edmund
camlex
First get second opinion, look in to rebuilt or used. $3800 that's lot of money. Sorry to hear bad news. car stalls in drive? or only in reverse?
George_Jetson
Yes get a second opinion. If they agree, I would recomend a used, low mileage trans imported from japan. You can get then delivered for around $300, not sure exactly what it would cost to get it installed, but my guess is that you can get out for around 1K. homemechanic
i got a 99 ES300 here and had the tranny rebuilt before. here is what you need to know -- do: 1. 99 model has 2 types of tranny: electronic vs. manual. electronic uses Type IV ATF and manual uses Dexcon ATF 2. When you go to an outside shop, they will give you 2 quotes. A = complete rebuilt, B = partial rebuilt Depends on how bad the tranny is, they will know complete vs. partial rebuilt once they take apart the tranny. Complete rebuilt includes new gears and shafts and other wear/tear parts. Partial rebuilt includes gaskets, clutches and other wear/tear parts (basically no hard parts in the partial rebuilt). All rebuilt jobs should include a new torque converter. Otherwise, DO NOT do business with that shop. my tranny is the electronic type = complete rebuilt $2500 and partial rebuilt = $1900 the manual tranny is cheaper to rebuilt because of cheaper parts. desperado2
Hey thanks for all the help... I checked with AAMCO they said it would cost around 2270 for rebuilding the transmission. Will take to AAMCo for a free diagnostic check again and get a second opinion before doing anything further .... but just wanted to make guys, is this issue seems to be something to do with the transmission, i dont later want them saying no it was something to do with the engine n not the trnasmission or whatever and not fix the problem .... n why doesnt a error code or check engine comes for such issues ??? homemechanic
it's your transmission that's the problem. it's fine to go for 2nd opinion. however, these free diagnostics aren't really that accurate unless they encounter a severe problem while driving. the really get an accurate view of the problem requires taking the transmission apart. by then, might as well rebuild it. if u get an error code, they can scan it. sometimes they can fix it by pulling out the filter and valve body. otherwise, most likely a rebuild job. desperado2
So finally took it a decent place (cool spring automotive in franklin TN), the guy checked and confirmed it problem with trans (just wanted to make sure before i took it to a trans shop) and recommended a nearby place they said they will do free diagnosis (Wont open anything until i say so) and get back with a quote by mon. so hopefully they can do a better job than these so called lexus dealers, who charge you 100 to reset your engine light n another 100 to say trans need to be replaced fully......... hopefully it can be fixed by a minor part if not a complete rebuild .... btw my advice .....if you are in Nashville Tn never take it to the lexus dealer here, they dont do anything or tell you what the problem n they rip u off for simple stuff...... desperado2
Hey guys, Took it to coleman trans, they did a free diagnostics for me and said the trns need to be rebuild, seems that the 1st gear is completely missed and is slipping from 3rd to 4th gear, so that why all the surges n all. said it wud cost 2200 + tax .... my only concern was they werent sure if the stall in reverse is because of the trans ....... which scares me although they said they didnot get any engine codes .............. so i am kinda concerned here as to whether rebuilding the trans will fix the problem....... please any thoughts on this .......... btw I have asked them to check once again on the stalling.... because the mechanic said he didnt notice when he checked it ... vignesh
yeskay
vignesh: if you purchased it recently why not return the vehicle back to the dealer or get the dealer to fix it. spending 3k for a tranny is not worth considering the current value of the car. desperado2
Hi All, Thanks for all the help. Finally had a remanu trans put in. It seems the inside casing in the trans had a crack which led to a leak in the reverse gear circuit thats why the stalling. Atleast now there isnt any more stalling in the reverse gear. BUt, I dont know why the rpm still seems to go up a bit n then come down as the gear shifts and sometime i can feel the car pause a bit and move as it shifts gears. The guy said since its a new trans it will be a bit shift so give it some time to set in. I wasnt fully convly convinced that after putting in so much money in it. Is this normal in Es300 cars ? I saw in some posts wherein they had mentioned about this problem as the trans shifts.. is this a common case in 99 Es300 models. Is there solution for this ....
