I cannot understand why you have removed everything just to check the timing,there sre marks on the crank pulley and the cam sprockets, did you have issues with the engine before the stripdown?

changing the timing belt, the last owner put it on and put it way out of time (like 90 degrees!) and somewhere left a bolt or something loose and it cut up the belt
