My wife drove our 01 RX300 untill it stalled due to engine overheating (blew a hose, now fixed)

Since overheating, I have a check engine lite for both knock sensors out of range and the car wont shift into fourth (overdrive). The check engine lite was easy, both sensors were heat damaged.

But the trans is giving me fits. I have switched cars with her for a few days (lucky women gets my 470. lol) to monitor the exact situ. It just stays in third as if THAT were top gear. Occasionally, like maybe three or four times out of the last fifteen outings, it shifted normally untill it warmed up, as if the colder thicker fluid fixed the problem. Got me pretty excited untill it fully warmed up then stopped at third gear again. Today, it was perfect for first thirty minutes, thirty miles of traffic untill I stopped for coffee. As soon as I restarted it, it was a three speed again.

Any ideas??

Thanx guys

The trans won't shift into 4th because the CEL is on. This is by design. Change the knock sensors reset the light and it will shift fine.

I could be wrong Mikey, but it sounds to me like he has already changed the knock sensors. Getting an all aluminum engine hot enough to stall would really concern me. Often, a cast iron won't even tolerate that real well. I saw a Vega years ago (brand new) that had a casting biscuit in the area of the thermostat housing so that there was NO water circulation. The car came in the morning after it was delivered, on a flatbed with 60 mi. on the speedometer. The block was split from one end to the other, out through the rear of the block into the bellhousing and out through the front into the water pump opening with a gap a 1/4 in. wide!! Aluminum doesn't tolerate overheating the way cast did.
