According to the owners manual for the 97 ES, Dexron 3 is recommended, not Toyota 4 oil.

Bingo, Toyo 4 was not invented yet (at the time). It is only a few years old. You can use Amsoil ATF with toyo but no need to. You are making a lesser fluid.

Not sure what you mean about "making a lesser fluid."

Can you elaborate?

My is a 01, spec'ed Toyota T-IV.

Toyota T-IV is phasing out. The new standard is Toyota WS.

It means Amsoil is better and you are making it less by adding T4 (less fluid)..I would take Amsoil ATF over T4 anyday.. Even Toyoat WS is not PAO/Ester based like Amsoil..

if it's share same fluid why you needs to open and drain?

(FYI

I did mention earlier:

every 15,000 drain and refill ,next 15,000 drop pan, change filter and refill

With 315,800 trans. is original with same condition likes new

I use DEX-III)

If there is material (aka metals) from the diff, it will sit in there. If you do not drain, it will just contaminate the other 65% of the fluid.

Why you are draining every 15K is beyond me. Also I would go at least 50K on the filter. The filters last a long time.

I think you are right, 15,000 is short miles for fluid and 30,000 for filter.

Reason I do @15,000 because that time I also replace air filter and PCV.

it's easy to do oil change every 5,000 and 15,000 trans. fluid PCV and air filter.

Hope that helps.

I went to local shop, He drained out differential fluid from rear drain plug.

from top, via rubber hose, through fill plug added trans. fluid til start drip.

I did check level on my regular trans., it's stay same, was before.
