Key Wont Go Past The Acc Position To Turn Off Car

I have a 95 LS400 and when I go to turn my car off, the key stops at the ACC position and wont go any further. The car gear shift is fully in the "park" position.

The most confusing part about all this to me is that if I quickly turn the key to the right, hear the engine fire, the quickly turn it back to the left, it will go past the ACC position and I am able to pull the key out of the ignition.

Tell me this isnt the craziest thing you have heard! I hope someone can provide some insight as to what the **** the problem might be and what I can do to correct it. Thanks!

Bad battery or the shifter is sticking.

I appreciate your reply, but it is definitely not the battery as I had to put a brand new one in two weeks ago.....this problem was happening both before and after that.

Everything Ive read points to replacement of the ignition cylinder, but am not sure.

Have you fixed this problem yet? I have the same problem with my 96 LS. If I disconnect my battery, the lock releases. I think my battery cables need to be replaced as my battery is new.

Have you spilled cola or a drink on the shift interlock button?

Mash it down 10 times or so to free it up. Spray some wd 40 on it.

Put a dab on the key as well.

Test.

Then take it apart and do a proper cleaning.

Also, try lightly sanding down the key w/ 400 grit sandpaper, oil.

That is a good possibility. I was thinking of that. Its just wierd that it releases when I disconnect the battery.

I had a ford taurus that would not start. It was the battery cable connectors. I would not be surprised if it turns out to be something to do with the battery cable connectors.
