Error Code P0420

Check engine light @ 272,000. Autozone says P0420.

Needs your input.

This car still runs great and I do like to keep it.

I did reset by unplug battery, added 200 miles, so far no CEL.

FYI, P0420 refers to the catalyst system. If it comes back on, check your front and rear oxygen sensors. Worst case would be a catalytic converter.

I did replaced front two O2 sensors six months ago. by cat. con.still is the original.

So i replaced Cat. Converter @ 279,XXX.(Universal) Now i have 284,000 on my car.

Again CEL shows up. run code through Autozone : P0420.

While CEL on I was driving and light disappear.

No more Check Engine Light.

What happens?

let me try this again...UNIVERSAL CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ARE GARBAGE!!!!

i do this for a living...people and other shops bring me problems cars...take it for what its worth. i wouldn't put a universal catalytic converter on anything, period!

You are right. CEL is back even i replaced O2 sensor after Cat.

Which one to buy(Cat). This car has almost 285000, runs great.

I think that I found the problem.

There is big vaccum line, which was losing its vaccum, so I cut about 1" from the end and installed it again.

CEL light disappeared (without reset) and I hope it never shows up again.

I replaced Cat. con. and O2 sensor for nothing. Lesson learned.

I found this picture which somebody posted earlier, i drew an arrow, please tell me which vaccume line it is.

when i got my es 300 i had a chek engine light caming up and trac off light to, p0420 code

the previous owner change full exausht systeme

but they put a litle flow catalyzer( speling in english??), like the one for the corralla or camry 4cinlinder and it was to much restriction

i put a Hi Flow catalyt systeme and no more trouble

Did the Hi Flow cat converter correct the check engine and trac off light problem? Did you notice if the car would not shift into Overdrive consistently?

I have noticed that the transmission will not shift from 4 to 5 consistently with the check engine light and trac light on.

My mechanic was seeing a code 61 but could not decipher the code 61 meaning.

After i replaced rear O2 sensor(after cat. con.), everything back to normal.

with 287,300 runs like NEW.
