SKperformance
most auto stores do code checking for free. eBay is the cheapest to get a simple one.

mburnickas
I have a Snapon micro scan. Worth every penny! http://buy1.snapon.com/products/diagnostic...C307A&qty=
92Lex
For a generic code reader : http://www.obd2allinone.com/google.asp?yid=obd2+code+reader. If you're going to spend 700 on a scan-tool, you might as well buy a used Snap-On mt2500 scanner.

Earl25
If you just want to get the error code. There's one from Costco and they do work in all my car, (Lexus, Honda and Toyota). CodeKey OBD II code reader, it's under $40.
