Door Jammed 92 Sc400

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at 1992 SC400 to purchase. While the car overall seems to be in reasonable shape, the driver's side door is jammed shut and can't be opened from the inside or the outside.

The owner doesn't want to pay money to get it fixed and I'm uncertain about how much it would cost to get it fixed since I can't see the source of the problem.

The owner says something about her grandkids borrowing the car and somehow it got damaged. I can't see any outward signs of any damage to the door, so I'm at a loss to figure out the problem since I can't see any damage.

I've read in the forum about door hinge problems and how they might be fixed, and I'm wondering if that isn't the source of the problem.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem in their SC 300/400? What was the cause of the problem? Does anyone have any idea what it might cost to fix something like this? Does anyone know how an owner might fix this problem himself?

I'm thinking about deducting at least $1,000 off the private party price for this because to me it's a huge unknown risk for me. Do you think that's reasonable amount?

Thanks!

yep that's what it is and I should know b/c it happened to the passenger side door on my 400 a few months ago and cost me damn near $350(labor included) just for that little clip from the Lexus dealership. The parts guy told me that the actual clip cost much less but the labor costs of pulling my door apart is what made it so expensive.

My drivers door did that too. I took the door panels off and had to fabricate a "O" shaped clip that broke and attach it to a rod that the handles push down on to open the door latch. It sounds tough but it's not that hard. It took me and friend about 2 hrs of fiddling about to make it work. I was so happy we figured it out!
