Leaking Cv Boot, Is Rear Drive Shaft A Diy Item?

I was flushing brake fluid today and I saw a lot of grease flung out of the CV boot at the left rear wheel. The procedure for removing the drive shaft looks routine in the Lexus manual but the rebuild to get a new boot on looks complex. Anybody done this repair? Do you skip the rebuild and just buy a rebuilt unit?

Thanks,

From my experience with drive shafts I would recommend a Rebuilt assembly and then install that. That will still save you lots of money.

Not too painful to the pocketbook. My indie replaced the boot for $90 labor and $35 in parts. Parts at my indie tend to be more expensive (this is part of their profit margin). While he was back there, he did the rear pads also (35m since last change) for $60 labor and $60 parts. The pads would have cost me about $52 from Plano. So far so good. I've had the car almost 3 years now and this is only the second repair that I have not been able to handle. First repair was some freon.
