Help : Replacing Coolant On Ls430

Hi Everybody,

I have 2002 LS430 which is 4years old and has 30K miles. Would like to replace the coolant. I have read other posts on the topic but still have some questions.

1. Is it necessary to drain the engine block ?

1a. If yes, then do we need to drain coolant from the drain plugs as shown in the pictures. Right side drain, left side and the radiator drain. Are pictures showing the correct valves to open.

1b. If yes then how do we fill the engine block again. Other posts state that fill the radiator and the radiator reservoir and then start the engine. Monitor and add coolant as needed. Is this correct procedure ?

1c. Lexus manual states that "Start the engine and open the heater water valve". How does one do that ?

2. How does one maintain the proper torque ? I never seen any mechanic trying to maintain torque. Is it essential to maintain torque.

3. Do we need to flush the cooling system ?

Thanks for your help.

Micky

Nice pics. Drain the block and radiator. You have pics of the correct drains. Near the firewall there's a metal pipe that attaches to the heater hoses. There is a bleeder tube with a rubber cap and clamp that points up. Remove the cap and fill the radiator until water/coolant comes out the heater hose vent cap. This will purge some air from the block. If you have a way to fill using that vent, fill it from there also. replace the cap and run the motor with the heater on. Most the air will bleed out the radiator after 10 minutes.

Micky,

Keep in mind that you are still under warranty and Lexus is very specific about lubricants and coolant in order not to void the warranty. You should schedule your 30k mile maintenance with the dealer that includes, Replace brake fluid, Air filter, coolant, oil and filter, re torque drive shaft flange bolts, Road test, Tire rotation and general safety inspections. They will waive Air Filter and oil/filter change if you have a sticker from a qualified shop. You will notice that when you leave they have stamped and signed off on your maintenance log. Very important!! At 30k miles, it is the first major scheduled maintenance that includes brake fluid and coolant. Once you are out of warranty you can ask these questions. Your next major is 60k miles and I would not miss that one either if you wish peace of mind and a happy reliable Lexus. Just my opinion.

Draining the block involves more complication for a do-it-yourselfer and is not really necessary on a near new Toyota like yours. Just draining and refilling the radiator every year or two using the factory fill coolant mixture (50% distilled water and 50% Toyota Long Life Antifreeze) will keep the cooling system clean and corrosion free for many decades to come.

Flushing is also unnecessary on a Toyota as young as yours because the Toyota coolant does a perfect job of preventing corrosion and scale buildup, hence there is nothing nasty in your old coolant that needs to be flushed out.

You'll notice that when you drain the old coolant it will still look as clean as brand new coolant.

Now when your car gets upwards of 75,000 - 100,000 miles on the odometer the exterior metal fins of the radiator and AC condenser will have accumulated alot of bugs and dust. When that time comes it would be best to remove the radiator to clean the bugs and dust off using a garden hose.
