SaraRX
The check engine light is on and I have code P440 reading on my 1998 ES300. It is evaporative system malfunction or something like that. What is wrong and how do I fix it?
SaraRX
I should also ask if it is safe to drive until it gets fixed?
steviej
try the simple stuff first, Shut the car off, take your gas cap off and retighten it, restart the car. Don't force fill the tank after the pump automatically shuts off, if you don't do this, then overfilled gas tanks aren't triggering the code. steviej
SaraRX
I already tried the gas cap. I ended up buying a new one just in case the old one was causing problems. The light still is on. What does code P440 mean? Could that mean charcoal canister or is that just the gas cap code?
steviej
send a PM to JPI, he is a Lexus Tech and can look it up for you. It could very well be the charcol canister, or the EGR valve. This was a code a friend of mine got twice. Once cleared by the gas cap thing, but six months later it was the canister. He split the cost with Lexus dealer that did the service cause it was one month out of the 4/50k warranty and it doesn't fall under the 7/70 powertrain warranty. steviej
