Whining From Speakers/installing Subwoofers

Hey All,

I've had this problem since I had a Sony deck installed in place of the stock Lexus head unit. I have an electrical whining that comes on when the headunit powers on, and changes pitch/frequency when the car accelerates. I just assumed that maybe the power cord to the Sony was running by some power line for the car that gained energy from the alternator. Is there any way to stop this noise? I asked the Bestbuy installers and they said "they couldn't tell me how to do it myself because it should be left to the professionals." I've done some car stereo work before and am pretty sure I can handle this. Also, I'd like to put some subs and an amp in the trunk, any recommendations on how to route the wires without having them exposed?

All of the power lines to your sound system should be run though a choke to keep out engine noise. Also known as a steroe noise filter. This includes your amps.

Try something like a the ones made by American international / Pacific industries in Camarillo Ca. They call thiers the Xterminator noise filter. You may have a grounding problem. You may have a ground loop, which is allowing the coupling of the alternator whine into your signal. Check your connections to ground, both at your amp AND your headunit - make sure they are solid and not obscured by any body paint. (Use a star washer under each grounding bolt head to cut into the surface if you haven't already done that.) Next try connecting a thick, low-resistance wire (spare 4 or 8 ga.) directly from your headunit ground to your amp ground to approximate more of a 'single-point ground'.

Hey just wanted to try and clarify something,

Are both responses talking about the stock amp in the car, or the one I want to put in? I will try taking out the headunit and checking wiring, but I'm definately looking into a noise filter. Are instructions included as to what wires to connect when you buy one? I see they are color coded but I just wanted to make sure they line up.

All of your "sound" system electroncs should be conected though the filter. And it is a easy hook up. One to ground one to positive and one to eqipment. All color coded and with instructions.
