Replacing Steering Wheels

I purchased my ES 300 in 1992 (first year this model came out). Steering wheel is looking "worn". . .I don't recall having purchased an upgrade package so the wheel is likely a non-leather material. . .and certainly not combination leather/wood as you will find in the newer Lexus models.

My local dealership quoted me $550-600 (before labor) to replace the wheel using a factory made kit.

Question: Is this the best, most practical way to fix my wheel, or, would anyone recommend an alternate plan?

(BTW, I have about 160,000 miles on my car and love how it drives. . .no immediate plans to sell it.)

wheelskins make a leather wrap for the wheel it comes with thread and can be done very easily in an hour very cheaply.

It doesn;t look cheap since it fits tightly over the whole radius.

I'm sure its a leather wheel, does it have stitching.

$600 is a lot to repair it with a "kit". You can replace the wheel for that.

I just finished puting a 'wheel skin' on my sc400 steering wheel. The original steering wheel leather was begining to break down. I guess the previous owner just ignored it. Any way, I bought a european style 'wheel skin' I got Burgandy top & bottom and Oak left and right. It turned out just as I had hoped. the oak color matches the accents in my interior and the burgandy matches the color on the body. Oh! I have a 1992 SC400 burgandy in color. It took me about 1 and 1/2 hours to complete the job. I really like the look and feel of the steering wheel now. When I take some pictures, I will post them
