Nakamichi System

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the club, and am in the process of buying a 98 GS400. The car has the factory nav system with a cd changer in the glove compartment. How can I tell if the stereo is the Nakamichi unit? There's no identification on the stack as is the case with the non-naviagtion cars. Do I have to count speakers? Thanks.

the 98 gs only comes with the pioneer system. your radio had id number p1708 on the cassette flap door. nakamichi raidos start with letter "n" on the cassette flap door. the nav computer in the trunk and the nakamichi amp both bolt into same trunk location. the pioneer amp is behind the glovebox. so you could either have nav or nakamichi in 1998. in 2001 you could have the best mark levinson and nav as they canged levinson amp to under the passenger seat insteads of the trunk. . the nakamichi system in 1998 gs had a digital equalizer and digital amp made by nakamichi which gives better clarity of sound and a little more watts .the rest of the nakamichi system in 1998 , the headunit and changer and speakers were made by pioneer. it is the same onthe 2001 gs mark levinson systems. pioneer makes most of the components except for the amp even on mark levenson in 2001. so there is a marked improvement in nakamichi and mark levinson due to digital sound instead of analog. the first generation nakamichi systems from 1990 to 96 were all made by nakamichi including headunit and speakers and were the best systems ever put in factory production cars. the later nakamichi systems were good but the first generation were the best of the nakamichi. 1998 owners with 2 gs cars side by side report a more fuller sound in the 98 nakamichi system so the impprovement is noticeable and the nak radio has actual buttons to adjust treble and base to personal taste.
