Since the 1998 LS is a VVT engine, will timing belt failure cause engine problems?

My 1998 has 94,000 miles, nearing the point Lexus suggests changing the belt. I don't relish spending some $900, but it it is better than $$$'s later if the belt breaks.

VVTi is interferance engine, broken timing belt will have 'bent valves' which is a $3K~$4K damage.
