PaulOfLexus
Hi, I'm trying to get a sanity check on a couple of suspension estimates I received from a new mechanic (old one retired during covid). Any thoughts? Control Arms Control Arm Front Left Lower w/ball joint assembly $210 Control Arm front right lower w/ball joint assembly $200 Labor: $770 Struts: Strut Assembly Seat left $225 Strut Assembly Rear Right $225 Labor: $500 Post repair/install Wheel Alignment: $125 Total is about $2300. Thanks for any assistance. Paul Location: Northern Virginia
RX400h
Those look like reasonable costs compared to what a dealership would charge.
lenore
I can add that the front control arms are a real pain to replace. The labor seems a little high. For a do it yourself, the control arms are less than $100 apiece from places like RockAuto. The Strut mounts are around $85 apiece. The best struts for Replacement are KYB. Our RX400h has had all of this replaced once, however the Control arms bushings crack because of design and I have replaced them twice at 267K miles. I find this kind of work not fun anymore as I get older. But saving money drives me to things I have always done.
PaulOfLexus
Many thanks for the advice! I was not planning on doing this myself - no skills. I too thought the labor was a bit high. Much appreciated.
Christopher72
Paul, why only replacing half of the suspension? Seems like with that investment you'd want all 4 done to bring the ride back to good. -Christopher
PaulOfLexus
Good thought. I got the repairs noted above and the car is riding much more solidly than previous. Not sure whether additional work would improve it or just make my mechanic happier. 🙂
Christopher72
I just finished replacing front and rear shocks/springs, tie rods, and stabilizer grommets of my honda minivan. Feels like a new van at 140k. The rear rides higher now as well on new springs... all OEM.
