  2. Actually, there are a total of 3 relays that you have to install: 2 under the hood and 1 by the rear driver's side tail light. My '03 GX was totaled this year, and I have all 3 relays, but not the wiring harness. I am selling the relays for less than I payed for them [they were pretty pricey for all 3), if you are interested. Etrailer has a factory replacement harness that works well. They list it for 2004, but if I remember correctly, GX 470 trailer harness is the same for all model years (please verify this with your dealer). I spent a long time under my GX with a voltmeter, only to find-out that you need all 3 relays to get ANY kind of trailer lighting with an '03 GX. I hope this helps!
  3. Hi All, Does anyone know if it's easy to swap just the brain from say, an '07 or later GX 470 to an '04 GX 470 and have the navigation system work correctly? I'm just curious, as I see navigation brains pop-up on eBay from time to time. Thanks!
  4. Sorry, that won't work. Your IS and GX each have a different generation navigation system. The maps are incompatible between those generations.
  5. Hey guys - there is a plug under the driver's side toward the rear wheel that is designed for the factory 7-pin wire harness. The harness is available at Sewell for about $200-$300. To make it work, you'll need a relay for the front and a big green relay installed in the back, under the trim panel, by the drivers side brake light. you can get the front relay at a Toyota dealer for a reasonable price, but I got my rear relay from Sewell. Doing the electrical this way will my your GX trailer wiring pretty much the way it would have come from the factory. I don't know what the part numbers are, but Sewell faxed me a diagram that had all of the part numbers that I needed, along with their installation locations.   6. My vehicle came with the receiver and trailer plug connector already installed. All I had to do was splice the ends of the dealer supplied wiring harness for the electric brake controller into the brake control, and plug the opposite end into the socket above the driver side trim panel. The Lexus/Toyota connector came with great instructions. The process took about 30 minutes. Thanks-A-Million!! Joe Joe can you tell me what part number you used for the green relay switch. I was told there are two relays. One for the front box part number 9098702025 and the other part number is 8198560020 Kurt Hi Kurt - I have an extra relay for the front box, which I would send to you if you want it for a good price. But enough of my spam... I don't have the numbers right now, but the rear relay is difficult to locate and the dealers that I've spoken with have no idea that it exists, except for Sewell in Dallas.   7. Funny, I just had to replace my turn signal as well. I went in from the top, after removing the plastic cover. It tool me about 10-15 minutes. My dealer offered to do it for $55, but I can't possibly drink enough coffee, bottled water and diet coke to make it up...not even if I ate more pretzels and biscotti. As for frequently blown bulbs, you may want to research LED replacements; the supposedly blow less frequently.
  8. Hello, To answer your question, if you have the right hitch (class III), it will handle that load with no problem. Just make sure that you have tires that will handle the load and that you keep your GX (or any other tow vehicle for that matter) properly aligned. I tow my boat with my GX 470. It's a 24' Supra Wakeboard boat that weighs more than 5000 pounds with trailer. A who friend trailers his 22' Mailbu with a 2007 Suburban was riding to a lake party with me and we had my boat in tow; he kept commenting on how well the GX rode, even with a large boat in tow. As for the length of the GX+Trailer, the relatively small turning radius of the GX is great! I used to trailer a smaller boat with my Dad's old GMC Sierra 3500 Dually Pickup Truck and it was tough to back into certain launch ramps because of the large turning radius of the truck. Also, you may have an issue with the length of the trailer and some launch ramp angles. Since your rig will be pretty long, you may exceed the length of the ramp you're on and the trailer tires may drop when you run out of concrete. If the boat ramp has algae growing on it, you may start slipping when tires leave the ramp, since prop wash tends to dig-out the lake bed at the end of the ramp. To minimize slipping or other boat ramp surprises, set your GX's leveling system to "low" and drop your GX into low gear (this will keep your tires from spinning if you have a heavy load and hit the gas quickly, that way you won't be or .There are more towing comments in this thread.   9. I finally fixed my problem! It was some sort of car alarm remote that had fallen down behind the door. I was thinking that it would be fairly easy also. So, I went out to my garage and dove in (I was not about to pay Lezus $500 to take abourt the console). I had done some radio deck and speaker installs on my cars in the past, so I will give it the old college try. Anyways, about 1 hour into the disassemble I had the entire center console sitting in the garage floor. At that point I was still was not able to get behind the doors, but I was able to turn the entire thing over and shake out the object that kept the doors from opening. It works know, but without a diagram it will take some time, strong verves and an understanding wife. Don't let the her see it in disrepair! You want to talk about flipping out! Anyways, I will be glad to try to explian but it would probably be just as easy doing it yourself. It may not take me that long next time but it was a pain to find access to all the screws to free the console. You also will need to unplug several things such as the DVD player and gear shift and console lights. thanks for the details!! I have the same problem with my GX, but a pack of gum is keeping them from fully opening...
  10. Hmmmm...It seems that the rear of my GX hates me... Has anyone removed the rear cargo door panel? My license plate screws are spinning when I try to removed them to install a new plate. My dealer wants to charge me $200 to swap the plates out. I think I should save the cash and do it myself. Has anyone ever had this problem?
  11. The inevitable happened: My rear wiper (arm and all) got ripped-off in a car wash yesterday. Every wash around here will not take responsibility for rear wipers; I knew that going-in, so I'm cool with it. Does anyone know of a good on line place to get a used rear wiper arm? I've never seen one on eBay. To add insult to injury, it rained today. <_<
  12. Amen to that!! Also, I'm one of the few that likes the swing-out rear gate. I can stand on my bumper and access the inside of my roof-top box more easily than I could with a box on top of an RX.

I use the $129 class III hitch from Hitch Source, rated at 5000 pounds. I can't remember how many bolts it has. when I have my GX serviced, I have the dealer mechanic inspect the hitch and it looks great after 2 years of use. I have a receiver-mounted bike rack, a tandem axle cargo trailer that I've put 2k miles on and a 5000 lb. wakeboard boat with trailer. I have a 2006 GX-470 with the trailer prep package. Didn't realize until now that doesn't include the hitch. Anyway, you're towing a 5000 lb boat with a class III hitch and you have no problems? I've recently purchased a new boat and plan to trailer it but now I need to buy the hitch. Local Lexus dealer wants somewhere around $600-$700 (total parts and labor) to install. I'm looking for reasonable - and safe - alternatives. I appreciate anyone's feedback here. Hi Bob - I bought my Curt Hitch from hitchsource.com. You'll have sticker shock for the harness ($180), so check a salvage yard for that if you want to save a couple of bucks, but whatever you do, resist the temptation of tapping your brake light wires and running a universal harness; it'll be more trouble than it's worth. Also, if you want to save even more $$, I have an extra relay for your front relay block that is brand new. I bought it from a Toyota dealer that would not accept returns on electrical parts; I'd be more than willing to ship it out to you for less than I paid. As for safety, I've had (knock on wood) no problems. Again, just follow all of the installation instructions for the hitch and have the dealer inspect from time to time when you do oil changes, etc, and you should be fine. with an air ratchet, the hitch itself took about 15 minutes to install. BTW - Relays took a 1.5 hours to research (but that is done for you through me B) ) and less than 25 minutes to install. Also, the Curt Hitch is round and looks virtually identical to the heavy duty (read: under bumper) Lexus OE hitch on my Dad's GX, right down to the curved round tubes.

  15. Hello - I answered your question in your newer post . You need another relay behind your tail light. I haven't been here in a while, sorry about the lack of reply on the mastercraft question. In a nut shell, 55 MPH is fine, no weight dist hitch. Haven't gone 70 for reasons of stopping on idiot-infested metro detroit highways -Joe

  17. When I did mine (same circumstances), I had to pop one relay in the from box and one behind the tail light (see the photo, the relay is the green box). A lot of people will tell you that all you need is the relay under the hood, but they rear relay is key. Why? because if you plugged the wiring harness in under the truck, by the spare tire and the relay under the hood, but not the green relay, a volt meter will show weak current when you check continuity at the harness. The green relay is available via mail order at Sewell Lexus. Photo Attached. Good luck! Joe
  18. Like other parts of the country, we had some ice storms here in Michigan over the weekend. Would you know it? The tree that I've been postponing cutting down fell under the weight of the ice and snow and landed on my GX! My windshield is broken and my passenger mirror sheared-off! I managed to find a replaceement on eBay for great price, but I'm having trouble taking the interior door panel off. It comes-off pretty easily, with the exception of the portion where the door latch is, toward the center. Is there are screw or fastener that I'm missing? Other than that, it looks like replacing the mirror isn't that hard. Thanks!! joe
  19. I know that this is an older post, but I've been doing a fair bit of towing with my '03 GX lately, and I must say that it has exceeeded my expectations! First, I moved my girlfriend up to Michigan from Central Ohio and used a fully-enclosed twin axle trailer. Inside the trailer was the contents of a 1200 square foot townhome. No shimmy, no creaking. Only the sound of the auto leveling system every now and then when parked. Hell, the ride was so comfy that the cat didn't make a peep! We drove over 250 miles and I topped 80 mph on more than several occasions. Secondly, I traded-in my old 17 foot boat for a new 24 foot Supra that weighs a little over 5k pounds. Suburban/Yukon/Expedition/F150/Ram drivers marvel at how well the GX handles the load! Where the GX really shines is turning radius; boat ramps are always almost pretty packed on weekends and the GX moves the boat as if it were half as long! because I have an '03, I had minimal prep for towing, but with the help of Sewell Lexus and Hitchsource.com, I was able to get a Curt hitch, Lexus wiring harness and relays for about $300. When I get a chance, I'll outline how I did the relays, since that seems to be a common question for us '03 GX owners. ...Now if I can only find a set of GX Rims for the boat trailer and say with confidence that my 3rd driveshaft won't clunk.
  20. I had a new driveshaft installed and about 6k miles later, the clunk came back. At first the dealer said it was being caused by a water bottle rolling around under the driver's seat (from a competing Lexus dealer, no less!). I had them pick the truck up to re-assess their conclusion and they replaced the shaft and control arms. So far, so good. I'll give it another few thousand miles to see if it comes back. Hopefully, this will do the trick and end the clunk issues for all of us! :D
  21. I use a Thule Evolution 1600 as well. I wish I would have logged-on yesterday, because the box as was on my GX and I could have shot a photo ans uploaded it. :( Other than the quality of the box, another great thing about this box and a GX 470 is that fits really well. Put it on your factory rack and slide it all the way back. The 1600 is short enough to let light in through the moonroof and not hang past your spoiler. From left to right, measure 5" from where your crossbar is mounted; the box will be perfectly centered.   23. I've used the Yakima Lift Ticket 6, but my snowboards and skis have always had road grime on them on the way to and after a trip, which meant more waxing and cleaning of my gear. Also, you have to buy Mighty Mounts to attach them to the factory rack. I started using rooftop boxes (you kow, the "pod things"). First, the Karrite Sport Box and more recenty, the Thule Evolution 1600. Both are nice, but to me the Thule Evolution is the Lexus of Boxes. It opens from either side and has an clear coat automotive finish on it, plus, it's more aerodynamic and it locks, so you can leave stuff in your box for extended periods of time. Speaking of stuff, when loaded correctly, these boxes are ideal for tossing extra gear onto the roof and reducing clutter inside your vehicle. I throw my snowy boots up there so I don't mess-up the inside of my GX. The best benefit is having extra space in my GX for people and not boot bags! I've experienced some drawbacks with boxes, though: First, no matter how aerodynamic they are, you can count on more wind noise and reduced gas mileage. Secondly, if you are like me, you run your car through the wash once or twice a week in the winter months. IF you have a box on your GX, RX or LX, you will have to find a "no touch" car wash with plenty of clearance to get your rig in (and still risk ripping the box off of the car, like I did). The other alternative is to remove the box after each trip, which can be a pain. Hope this helps... Joe
  24. Hi All - For the first time in my car audio tinkering life, Crutchfield has no information on this! I want to install a Pioneer Double DIN nav/receiver into my GX without the NAV system. Has anyone come across a wiring harness and dash kit for this? If so, were you able to keep the rear headphone/volume control functional? I have my doubts about this one, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask... Thanks!! joe
