Update... I took my car to lexus a few days ago and they diagnosed the problem within an hour. For me the problem was the injector. I have driven the vehicle probably a little more than 200 miles since getting it fixed everything is in great shape so far. Turned out to only be a $400 fix..

I have the same thing on my 98 GS400. If you shift the gear selector to M (left of D) you can shift the car from 2-5. This is a sort of manual shifting.. like paddle shifters or something like that.. If you didnt notice, there are also buttons immediate behind on the back of the wheel that act as the "Up" shift.

Did you ever find a permanent fix for your problem? I currently have a similar problem and I am planning to take it to the shop tomorrow to get it diagnosed and any information ahead to help them out would be great.

Just go to one of the major autoparts stors and have them reset the check engine light (CEL) with their diagnostic unit..

I have a 98 GS400 with the exact same problem many others are having here. dcfish, you seem to be the go to guy for this problem. how can I fix this problem and what kind of cost am I looking at? Just like the others, my lcd screen on my 98 GS400 with a Nakamichi sound system is going out on the right side (3-4,5-6)... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

im guessing this handheld scan gun is something only the dealership is going to have? im definitely not again just shutting off the feature completely once i get it to the position i want. thanks

I have a 98 Lexus GS400 that the motor for the tilt steering has a short in it. every once in a while i get lucky and it will work for a little while. of course lexus told me it would be $1300 to replace the motor so that is not happening. i was curious if anyone had ever bought a steering column with all the parts on it and replaced this part, or the whole steering column, themselves. im wondering if it is something i would be willing to take on myself. also if anyone has other info concerning the motor or other ways around the problem that would be great as well.

If i could get that repair manual sent to me that would be wonderful... is it good for 1998 gs400 as well? thanks ddrigsby@gmail.com
