  1. I just removed that weird little air snorkel thing off the air box because that looked like it constricted air flow more than it helped it. Gave the engine a little bit better sound too. As for the PWR-ECT button, if you want to hold shifts longer, you could always just shift the transmission down. :P
  2. Alright, I won't end up adding anything other than new oil. And I am near 100% certain the spark plugs are way overdue to be changed, I can't find any service records that say they were.
  3. Ouch, that's not quite what I wanted to see, but I guess it will have to do.
  4. So we've had the two O2 sensors closest to the engine (234-4048 and 234-4630) fail and they need to be replaced before it starts to damage the cat. Problem is, everywhere I look they are ridiculous unless you get them without the connector. I'd prefer one with a connector, but I guess I can mange without. Where would be the best place to get them cheap? I will be installing them myself, but right now money is tight since my dad is changing jobs.
  5. There are quite a few things about Virginia that disturb me, and being the state that headquarters PETA is one of them. What a bunch of freaks.
  6. The mechanic read the codes and the first two where the ones that failed. One in the back has already been changed too. The part numbers are 234-4048 and 234-4630, I got that from the preliminary receipt they gave us. Also going back to the original topic, it isn't sludge so much that I'm worried about (though that probably is an issue) it is the carbon build up which Seafoam is specifically made to get rid of. I was just wondering if anyone had ever used it or not. I'm just trying to compile a list of things to do since it has been decided that we are keeping the car for the time being while my dad is switching jobs.
  7. That works just as well. Should I be changing the oil filter while I'm at it? And I am waiting a few weeks because between work and summer classes I don't have the time to do it right now. I also need some new O2 sensors and I was hoping to do everything at once. Which reminds me, I need to replace the front 2 O2 sensors and I need to know where I can get them at a decent price. The shop we took it to when the check engine light came on was going to charge $183 each, and then $90 in labor, and that is just too much.
  8. Hey guys, I'm looking to do an oil change in the next few weeks and I'm looking into some products to help clean the engine internals. I will also be changing the spark plugs since I know that hasn't been done in a while. My main question is how to approach it. I put in some STP fuel injector cleaner last week in a full tank of premium (which the car hasn't seen in over 4 years) and ran it empty. Already I've noticed a 10-15% jump in fuel economy. What I am looking to do now is get down into some of the tougher stuff that has accumulated over the 134k+ miles the car has on it. I've got it narrowed down to Seafoam and Restore (http://www.restoreusa.com/). What I am looking for is if anyone has experience with either of these products, and which one I should use. Or even both. Also, some insight on how to do some of the basic maintained on the car (2000 GS 300 if you need to know) would be great, because I've finally acquired some jack stands so I can properly (and safely) do the work myself. Thanks for your time.
  9. Sorry about the double post but I found out what broke. The shop said the torque converter was literally destroyed and the shop had never seen anything so bad. The transmission is out of the car and has been sent to a specialist because apparently you can't buy a torque converter for this transmission anymore and it has to be rebuilt. This is just my luck I guess.
  10. I went home over Easter weekend, and the car looked rough so I gave it a bath. One thing the car desperately needs though is a coat of wax, or 6... Problem was the wax my dad has is years old and long gone. What seems to be the best stuff out there now, the easier the better, but I'd rather do it right. Anyway, here's the pics.
  11. Thanks, that's what my dad ended up doing. Thankfully they are just going to rebuild the broken part and replace the seal. Way better than the last ditch repair of getting a brand new transmission.
  12. Something in the transmission in my/my dad's 2000 GS 300 broke and busted a seal in the process. The shop it is at now doesn't know what to do, and won't say/doesn't know what broke. I'm wondering if it is best to just take it to a Lexus dealership now. We are currently in the process of debating whether to sell the car or not, and obviously need to fix this before we actually do. I just don't want them to replace the whole transmission when they don't have to. I wish I could offer more info, but I'm away from home in college and can't get the right info myself.
  13. I don't know if my car has the same system (its the Platinum Series, or whatever they call it), but I think is sounds awesome. In some bass heavy songs I can feel it going through the seat, and there is absolutely no distortion. It is the only thing in my car that isn't having problems right now.
  14. You really get 23 on the highway! I have to take the city route to work because my car uses less gas in traffic than at highway speeds. At 70mph the car is running about 2700rpm and I think that is a bit much. I average maybe 13 on the highway and maybe 15-16 in the city. Is there something legitimately wrong with the car or is my mind playing tricks on me? PS my car has a little over 129k miles and I don't think the spark plugs have been changed in about 60k miles, need to double check service records
  15. I have the same problem, I checked the wire coming off the throttle body and noticed there was a fair amount of slack to it. Think that could be the problem? It gets really annoying in stop and go traffic since it also dumbs down my throttle responce.
  16. Thanks. I searched but nothing came up within the first few pages and I gave up. Sorry.
  17. Alright, the spark plugs on my '00 GS 300 haven't been changed in almost 60k miles. I went out and bought some, but I can't seem to locate them on the engine. Am I just completely blind or are they somewhere in the lower part of the engine?
  18. My car has Falken tires on it and they are pretty good. They don't have quite as much grip as the Goodyears before them, but they are much quiter and it makes for better crusing. My dad found them pretty cheap from Tire Rack.
  19. Hey guys. I have a black 2000 GS 300 platinum series with a little over 127k miles on it. It was handed down to me from my dad since I needed a car to get to my summer job. The only real issues we've had with it were two freak accidents, one where a rock broke one of the fog lamps and another when the sunroof blew out suddenly when my dad was on the highway. And there are a few exhaust brackets that have rusted and have started to rattle. Oh, and then there is the time the car slid off the highway on a patch of ice at 15 mph. Over all I think it's a great car and I look to upgrade with an air intake and/or new exhaust.
