  1. Hello everyone, Here's my question. I want to change the tranny fluid on my 93 ls400, but can't decide on what method. Some people say to replace 3 quarts at a time?? that doesn't make sense to me.. because it's still being polluted or mixed no? is there a way to dump the whole thing (as the dealer claims THEY do it - albeit for 150.00) Is there a way to do it myself? I can but the case of toyota type 4 transmission fluid. Thanks, Al
  2. I see what you are saying. Is there a reason why you are concerned with speedo accuracy... if you take the discrepancy into account mentally, you can just apply it as you drive no? U can do 235/55 17s.
  3. I think if it was an oil drip, the smell would be consistent.. and it isn't. No smell in the morning.. or in any other setting other than, when I leave work (and that's SOMETIMES). plus, car has no leaks.
  4. nice wheels... I'd switch to 55 series sidewalls. It'll fill up your wheel well a bit more, and give you a better ride. Unless you get 18s I don't think low profile tires look good on older LS400s. Nice clean car!!
  5. Hello, Wondering if any of you have experienced this before. I've noticed a couple of instances where my car has a funny almost burnt log (ash) smell in the cabin. The odd part is that the only 2 times ive experienced it, it has been while entering the car after it's been sitting at work for 8 hours. I've only smelled it twice (today being the second time). I know it's nothing inside the engine compartment, but I'm wondering if the issue isn't with the micron air filter inside the cabin??? I do know that I have a crack in my ERG pipe, but I can't imagine that the fumes have anything to do with this peculiar smell... Your thoughts please..
  6. Hello all, I was just wondering what you guys recommended as far as 15k maintenance. I recently picked up a clean 93 LS400 with 112K miles... and all service records at lexus. I just figure I can save a lot of cash by having my mechanic do the work for me. How complicated are these cars anyway? I wanted to basically do Sparkplugs, mayyybe wires, (what else?) does it have a cap and rotor? I took it to the dealership for an oil change, and I was wondering.. I don't think they use synthetic at the dealership.. but the previous owner told me he did... so should I go back to synthetic? will it damage the engine? If so, what weight Mobil 1 should I use? Thanks all...
  7. Hey... I'm having the same issue with my 93. If you notice, you might also be getting a slight vibration at a low rpm. You can find the egr pipe with gaskets for around 150-155 shipped. www.irontoad.com has it for that price. good luck. Al

  9. Should I wait to see if it does it again?? maybe it was just.. a one time thing.?.. I'll clean the battery, I think the dealer did replace it 40K miles ago.
  10. I must have read something incorrectly. Are you saying that the car has a 15-year old battery in it? :o I highly doubt that is the case. In fact, I'd be shocked if this isn't at least the 3rd battery in the car. No, you are correct... I'm sure it's been replaced at some point, but I know it wasn't at Lexus, and I don't know exactly how long ago... I'll remove the brace, and see if I can see a date or something... car starts right up, so I don't think it'll be the bat. Maybe it was a fluke thing... I don't know. Maybe alternator is starting to go.. I don't know.
  11. also... after the light came one... I drove about 20 miles, and not one issue... everything as normal. This morning on my commute, I drove 50 Miles.. and also, Not one problem. The light has not come back at all.
  12. Hello... Power steering rack solenoid screen??? Where is that? I haven't checked anything like that.. my powersteering is fine, and I recently had the car in for oil and TLC inspection at lexus... they didn't say anything apart from the cracked EGR pipe... I was thinking about the battery, but the car always starts right up... with no problem. Could it be that the Alternator is starting to go? I just went outside to look at the alternator.. on the front passenger side (right side) under the Power steering res.. and it all looks dry. Is there something else I should be checking.. The Battery is covered, but The positive has just a tiny bit of white corrosion on it.. that couldn't be could it?
  13. Hello all, I recently purchased a 93 LS with 112K miles. The car has all records, and it seems to have been serviced religiously. I've put about 2K miles on it already with no problems (except the dash fuel and rmp gauge getting stuck) and today, I noticed that the battery pilot came on for a second... and then went away.. No other indication or anything going wrong. I was going out, and within a minute of starting it, I saw a faint battery pilot come on, and was gone as soon as it came on. I went to records I got from lexus,(print out) and it seems the battery has never been changed (unless it was not done at lexus). Do you all think I should invest in a new battery? or is it an indication of something like an alternator? I put another 30 miles since, and the light hasn't come one and there is no indication of anything abnormal.... Needless to say, I'm a bit puzzled.
  14. egr pipe can be found in austin texas at the lexus dealer for 477.32 i have the same problem with the same year car and i am about to get it fixed No, I found the EGR pipe online for 132.66
  15. WOW thanks all!!! Yeah, Lexus said the EGR pipe was cracked for sure.. and it would be about an 8 hour charge. But I'm certain that it can be done without removing the trans.. just doesn't seem like it's well thought out if the trans has to come off... We'll I'm gonna order the part, and have it installed by my own mechanic. As with the off the line power... I guess it's fine.. I was just wondering, as most cars I've driven tend to be really responsive off the line. But I doubt the car has any issues with the cats, since the power at low RPM power when rolling is superb. ~al
  16. Hi guys, My car has a slight (very slight) vibration at around 1200 to 1400 rpm (93LS with 113K). Lexus said it was most likely a crack in the EGR pipe (the tech did a TLC inspection). My question is, where can I get this pipe online guys? Lexus wanted 1200.00 total for the pipe, I said no thanks. Is it really complicated to change, or is lexus just price gauging!? Another thing I wanted some info on... The car is super smooth and a joy to drive.. only thing I've noticed that is a bit different from other cars is as follows: when I'm at a dead stop, and I floor the gas pedal all the way down, it doesn't accelerate violently like most cars do.... there is a slight delay, and starts to accelerate moderately then a second later when it's doing say 20 or 30 mph.. the storm really comes on, and doesn't let up. I tied all settings possible.. ECT off, OD off.. nothing.. no Ooomph!! off the line. Is this just the way the cars are because they are luxury vehicles? And thanks in advance about info on the EGR pipe (and will I need gaskets or anything else?)
  17. Wow.. thanks for all your responses!!! So do you know where the ECU is? And.. won't I mess other things up by unplugging the ecu? I don't want to open Pandora's box..heee.heee. sunroof response makes sense.. The car does seal very well. As far as the pasenger door lock, It does seem to move slowly.. do you have suggestions on how to lube it? WD40?? Hopefully I won't have to take the panel off huh?? Thanks again WWest for your knowledge..
  18. Hello everyone.. I'm new here and just picked up a 93 LS super clean and have loved every minute of driving! The car has full lexus records, and purrrs. with 112K miles it looks like it's a 4 or 5 year old car (i'll post pics later). One of few issues ( there are 3) I have is that the passenger door lock SOMETIMES doesn't want to lock again when I press the lock button on my side of the door. Is there a vacum line or is the power door lock cable actuated? Another thing I wanted to ask... I notice that sometimes I have the moonroom closed tight seal.. and after a few times closing and opening the door... seems like I hear more wind noice around the moonroof area.. Once i open it slightly and close it again, the wind noise is gone... weird huh? Last issue.. Tach sometimes sticks at 0 for a little bit.. and my fuel gauge.. totally reads wrong.. does not register full when tank is actaully full.. do you guys think this is.. the send unit in the tank, or the actual instrument cluster as is comon with this series LS??? Thanks again for ALL your help.. and I will post pics soon.

I'm having the same issue with my 93 LS.. the crazy thing is that although the RPM needle sometime sticks for a little while, it is predominantly my Fuel gauge needle that is completely inaccurate. It's full and it only reads half, and then it might go up a bit.. and later it might come down a to just a 1/4 when in reality I am almost full.... Do you all think it's the same issue with too much lubricant on the needles? THanks for the advice. Al
