  1. ok so heres my plan, I want to open up my headlights, and paint the silver parts that arent part of the lens flat black, similar to what you see on alot of newer cars (scions for example). i know that will involve taking off the plastic cover. my brother did that on his altima a few years ago to remove some amber plastic by putting the headlights in the oven for the sealer to melt then prying the cover off I'm wondering if anyone has ever dona anything similar and can give me any advice. my biggest question is what temperature to bake them at and for how long. thanks Jason

  3. ok so i think i finally figured out what was wrong with my car. after paying 400 dollars for diagnostics at the dealership they say i need a new ocv, new spark plugs, and a new timing belt. im picking it up from the dealership today and taking it to my usual mechanic, i guess i'll have to wait and see how that works out. hopefully that info might be helpful to anyone with the same problem
  4. ok so i need to buy new spark plugs for my 98 ls400, what is the best kind to buy?
  5. I'D LOVE ANYTHING YOU COULD GET ME ON A '98 LS400 OIL CONTROL VALVE REPLACEMENT (DIAGRAMS WOULD BE GREAT TOO). OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT HAS TO DO W/ VVT SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. YOU'D BE MY HERO IF YOU CAN GET THAT
  6. jason@droorassociates.com and to nc211 i say thank you, you've given me a new perspective to look this situation from. i was just getting frustrated and its a '98 by the way
  7. there are lots of sites online which claim to have this info but you gotta subscribe. problem is i don't have a credit card right now so i cant subscribe to anything. i really appreciate you trying to help but basically i need to find a site w/ this info without a subscription or it does me no good. any other good ones to look at?
  8. ok so i found out i have a vvt system malfunction (error code P1349, plus codes telling me cyl 1,3,5,7 are misfiring). i posted a question about it on this forum yesterday, thankfully someone helped me out a lil bit and told me it probably had to do w/ my oil control valve. i've literally spent the entire day on different search engines typing in everything i can think of that might bring up some info, and frankly its just ridiculous how hard it is to find any info about it. i found 1 pdf that someone posted a month ago on this forum which began to give directions but it constantly referenced pages with non working links, and alot about ppl having this problem and the dealer charging them lots of money and not fixing it, but no resolution to the problem. i even started just looking to find out how much it'd cost to buy a new one hoping maybe that would give me a link to a useful site, but i cant even find a single one for sale online anywhere. is there something about this part that someone is trying to keep secret or something? i mean seriously this is ridiculous. any info anyone can give me about anything even slightly related to this would be very helpful. best case scenario would be a good diagram of where it is in the car, directions for how to replace it, where to find the part, or a link to the website where i can find any of those things. i have a friend who is a very qualified mechanic that is willing to help me with this but he doesnt have any of the literature on my car, or on this problem. so i am trying to find any info he can use thanks in advance -jason
  9. ECM or OCV huh? thank you, its a start. i'm gonna read up on that a little bit, hopefully thats what it is. ok so i just got back from talking to my mechanic, he gave me the complete list of codes the obd came back with; P0300 - random/multiple cylinder misfire P0301 - cylinder 1 misfire P0303 - cylinder 3 misfire P0305 - cylinder 5 misfire P0307 - cylinder 7 misfire P0135 - O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction (bank 1, sensor 1) <---- the only one that was easy to fix P1349 - Variable Valve Timing system malfunction (bank 1) ok so now i know what to start looking for but the problem is far from resolved, so any additional input anyone can give me would be awesome, thanks again.
  10. ok so like the heading says i have a 1998 LS400 with about 150k miles. a while ago my check engine light came on, at autozone they told me it was my O2 sensor, i didn't think about it too much because i was told (probably incorrectly) that its no big deal. about a week ago my VSC light came on and my car started idling low and shaking a lil bit. i took it to my mechanic and he says the diagnostics test came up with 7 codes, one of them was the O2 sensor, one of them was the P1349 VVT system malfunction (bank 1), and there were 5 other codes he said were related to the VVT malfunction. he says because he doesn't have the literature on it he can't begin to fix it. he called his buddy at the toyota dealership, his buddy said it's been so long since that code came up that he has no idea what to do about it. that makes it sound to me like it's gonna be expensive, I cant afford to keep paying people to not fix anything, so if someone has encountered this before and can tell me what needs to be done it'd be great. ok so long story short anything anyone could tell me, or any suggestions on a good place to find this info would be very helpful. even wrong info is better than what i know right now. thank you all very much
