  1. Sounds like the batt/alt. Check all your connections and charging system.

I just had this same exact problem. Went out with my wife and when we got into the car to go home, nothing. I got out and checked the battery terminals and they were loose. Tightened them and off I went. Next day I went to have BATT tested and it read 12.41 volts, checked out ok. I replaced the terminal connectors since they were no longer holding. Went with all lead terminals instead of the stock thin metal ones. Worked great for about 80 miles.

The second day I was on the highway and started to experience a battery light, headlights went dim, and poor engine performance. Got off at an exit, went to a fast food parking lot and the thing died, nothing - no lights - just a dead car. Waited a little while, about 30 minutes, and the car no miraculously had some power to the interior lights, but not enough to turn the engine. Checked to terminals again, they were tight. Looked for signs of leaking and percolation but nothing. Finally noticed the battery case itself was a slight bit "bulbous" in that the case was starting to distort and bulge indicative to a bad battery - the same one that tested fine 2 days earlier. The additional ambient heat (over 90 the past few days here in Phoenix) combined with the highway driving instigated possible shorting of plate in the battery itself. Common here in Arizona. When the battery and engine compartment cool down, the plates are no longer touching and thus a sort of tease thinking you have your electrical power back. Freaky huh?

I replaced the battery right there in the parking lot with a new one - and problem solved, runs like a champ. Now, I will have the charging system tested to ensure the alternator, etc. are working properly....but my guess the culprit as the old battery that did in fact show signs of age. The plates were crusted over when I looked into the vent tubes, along with not even the slightest spark when applying the terminal connectors as you would experience with a fully charged battery. I would guess that the lack of a tight connection (not charging well) and the age of the battery in combination with the heat wave this week killed the thing. These cars are electric everything, and a fresh battery is a must along with a frequent user check of the charging system and battery. Lesson learned tonight! :)

Reference the picture of my engine compartment on my album page under my profile. Check out the side panel on that battery, not looking too straight.

Few months ago, it was very cold here in Ohio below 0 degree. My battery 1 year old was also killed, thanks for AUTOZONE replaced brand new one without charge. I thought my Alternator was gone, but it was not after I removed the battery and brought to AUTOZONE for checkup. They told me it was shot, everytime, he added the load to it. Otherwise, it seems good condition, +12v without load.

  2. Guys and gals, I am at my wits end with my Lex. I have a '91 LS 400. I am getting a severe misfire. I am idling at 500rpm and when I throttle the car up, it seems to stumble then also. I am smelling raw gas out the exhaust and it takes putting the accelerator to the floor to climb the slight incline into my driveway. I just changed the wires and put all new Denso Iridium plugs in. NO change, still running terrible. Any suggestions before I have this thing towed to the dealer. note: I have new rotors and distributor caps, but have not installed those as of yet.

    Blake,

Did you replace the distributor by yourself?

  3. I just fixed my trunk leaks in the weekend. I removed the weather strip from the trunk, also cleaned up the moist and dirt build up on the edge of the rubber. Since, the weather strip is still in good condition, I use silicon to reseal the it back on the trunk then keep the trunk close tight for a day.

Now, it looks good as new.

  4. My trunk is leaking, I see the water runs down from the back wall where the trunk's lock located. Anyone have the same problem? and know how to resolve this? Replacement for weather strip from Dealer is $154.00

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Scott,

when you said the wire on the back of the unit that is connect to the light switch, what color of the wire exactly? There are 3 connector Blue (small) White and Gray. I assume the wires must be locate in one of this connector. Does in the back of the circuit board label any name for this wire?

My backlight only lit up when I press on the back or the side of the radio case then it will cause them to light up fine at night time with head light is on. I suspect there were some loose solder or components, but there were none.

Does anyone here has Pioneer service manual?

    Jeremy

    Bob, (ls400)

When you turn your lights on and your panel lights DIM, that is by design. There is a wire on the back of your unit that is connected to your light switch. When your lights go on it dims the panel lights because it assumes it is night time and you don't need as much light. You can override this by disconnecting that wire.

  6. Hello guys,

Today I made some progress with fixing my stereo backlight and LCD display. First you guys can order your parts from https://www.pioneerelectronics.com. I would order the awhole LCD INDICATOR ASSY instead of just the LCD itself.

Regarding to the backlight problem, you need to have a pioneer service manual, they will provide the location and part of power supply where it fails your back light.

Here some examples below where I oder the parts and costs. This will save you about $100.00 from shipping to radio repair man.

    Good luck to all.

  7. Initially I thought my Fan Bracket bearing was making noise. So I did some reading here and try to remove it, but while removing it, I also found out the Tensioner bearing was bad then replaced them. After replaced them, noise still there then I replaced the belt idler bearing and the serpentine belt. Now, my car is running smooth at start up. The idle always set 1100rpm rather than 1500-1700rpm.

So, for those of you have problem with high idle problem. This could be solved if you replaced these items. Happy ending.

  9. Tensioner bolt is left handed threads - clockwise to loosen - that easy - on replacement counter clockwise to tighten - torque to 27 ft-lbs....that simple.....

I just removed the whole tensioner assembly, I wonder if I can just replace the bearing only instead of the entire tensioner assembly. Where can I purchase it? So far, I got a quote from Imported Replacement Part for $129.99 and it comes as exact the picture show here.

  10. Looks to me that the new tensioner is not compatible so you'll need a Lexus one. I always use OEM if I can afford it.

I am having the same problem right now, and I am about to replace the entire tensioner from Imported Replacement Parts which only cost me $129.99.

  11. save yourself another $ 100 & buy off e-bay from lex-toy-parts.....do a search on "Lexus LS400 fan bracket" ...he is lextreme that you so often hear about.......

his fan brackets are original leftovers from some importer.....this is the original factory fan brackets that were installed OEM...

I just bought one.....his brackets contain the Japan "Koyo RR6 bearing" in them.....

They are not Chinese knock-offs that others are selling on e-bay.....

    Jeff

Do i have to loose the Tensioner and remove the belt before remove the fan bracket?

    Thanks

  12. Just received Internet fan bracket off Internet from lex-toy-parts....

Just like he said.....his brackets are overstock items from an importer......

these are Original Lexus Factory OEM fan brackets for only #$99....

I can tell by the bearing that is in these Brackets.......The orignal bearing was a "Koyo RR6" bearing & has brackets contain these.....

Put new bracket on today & car is running tops again......

Anyone how to remove the fan? Any special tools needed from dealer before tackle the job?

  13. Anyone knows why Idling is high at warmup? After 3-5 mins warm up the idle goes back to normal 400-500rpm. The colder it gets the high the idle will be at startup. At normal 50-60 degree F, the idle will start out at 1500rpm. It gests worst when 10 degrees outside, it will start at 1900 rpm. Thanks for any inputs.
