  1. I'm glad I found this, because I'm having problems with the condenser fans after a recent starter replacement. In the process of replacing the starter, a blue-colored valve of some sort that sat on a main coolant line crumbled apart, necessitating it's replacement. A new one is in it's place, but it's not helping me solve the problem of the A/C working half-heartedly. The blowers are just fine, but the A/C is putting out some rather tepid temps. The Freon levels seem to be fine, though, but there's no power going to the condenser fans (huh???) I've checked the fuses and whatever electrical connections I could find. Now it's time to check the relays....
  2. yeah, when it is on 'high' the car raises up a little bit. also firm up suspension in sports mode. BTW, do you know the previous owners replaced any of the 4 air shocks? FYI, each one cost over $1,000.00 ; When to tell they are bad? the car will sag to the corner of the bad air shock; usually you will see it in the morning. Be aware!! :o I'm a bit worried now. The front air shocks on my 92 will sink if left undriven within a 24+ hour period. But start it up and the suspension will go back to normal height. At one point, it was permanently stuck on "HIGH" and I somehow managed to coax it back to normal. Somehow.

  4. The 15" wheels on my 92 look a bit....puny. I really do like the look of the Lexus wheels, so I figured I could keep the entire look by grabbing a set of 16" wheels to replace the 15 inchers. Now will that work out without any major hassles (offsets, etc) or will I end up having to look for some decent BBS wheels as an alternative?

I've come from owning a long line of cars where the smallest of creaks and bumps usually mean somethin's gonna go.....or already went, so here I am constantly looking for things to go wrong on my 92 LS400 when, in fact, there's absolutely nothing amiss. It's been the most reliable car I've ever owned by a long shot. On the other hand, my biggest gripe about it is the fact that the repairs take a lot of time and money -- 5 to 6 hours of shoving the intake aside just to get at the starter? And a $850 estimate for parts and labor to boot? That, and the issue with the cupholders -- big enough to handle a canned drink, but not a 20 oz bottle or a BK half-gallon cup.
  6. I picked up a 92 LS400 for $1500. It had 341k on the clock. But it runs like a top and was pretty well taken care of. Save for this starter issue I'm dealing with, it needs only a few cosmetic touch-ups. :whistles:

  8. So here I am, with my 1992 LS400 in need of a new starter. I've already talked to a local mechanic who was willing to do the job for about $850, parts and labor. I've already poured some $1200 into the car since I've bought it, and I'm reluctant to take another $900 hit. This is gonna be one helluvajob for me, since it'll involve moving the intake just to get at the bugger. :cries: I have the manuals and the tools. All I need is time, and a few things: 1) does anyone happen to know the part numbers for the gaskets that need to be replaced once I get the intake off. 2) can I get at the starter without having to take the intake all the way off? It would be nice to find some safe shortcuts. 3) .........anyone care to tell how to drain the coolant? 4) and if there's anything I should look out for? That said, I've already had the spark plugs, wires and distributor caps replaced, plus a valve cover gasket that taken care of. The next item on the list is a new timing belt
