  1. Did you have the codes read? Some say Pep Boys will do it for free.
  2. The totally redesigned Cobalt is at the bottom! GM is history.
  3. The first obvious suspect are the tires. Are they worn, summer, or snow tires? You may be one of the few who find the road noise of the Lexus annoying. These cars have excellent decibel ratings under perfect road conditons, but they litterally roar over rough roads. You may want to be more descriptive of the noise.
  4. Get the sockets with laser etched sizes on them. Wish they were around 25 years ago when I started my collection. The problem with those 1001 peice sets is that they cheap out on the quality of the wrenches and ratchets. In the long run you'll replace them with the ergonomic ones anyway. The fully polished ratcheting wremches have been my favorite, then the extra long handled wrenches. An impact driver is super nice to have to losen lug nuts and such. Take your time and build up the set as things go on sale. That's my 2 cents.
  5. Point taken, burnickas. Actually, your preaching to the choir. There's not a chance in hell I'd pay $600 for two sensors. But he took it to the stealer before I had a chance to investigate the situation. All of your comments are appreciated. Thanks.
  6. "So you take $67 X 3 = $201…Look at the savings!!!!!" That equation is not taking into account the labor and hassle in changing them: ($67 + $100 (diagnosis, labor, hassle)) X 3 = $500 Whether OEM is better than Bosch I have no idea. There is some peace of mind in using EOM parts.
  7. My dad's 93 LS engine light went on just after he filled it up with gas. The dealer took $600 to replace two 02 sensors. Ouch! My guess is the sensor would have cleared up on the next tank of gas.
  8. I was dissappointed with the road noise on my '93. It's quiet on smooth terrain, but it roars over rough pavement. It's a fine automobile, but I feel that Lexus "quietness" is overrated.
  9. An on-dash solar charger would have been ideal, but the car is garaged mostly. I'm concerned of any safety issues. The connector does have a decent cap, not sure if it's weather proof.
  10. My Dad's '93 LS400 drains batteries. That's accepted. For the times that the car sits for a few weeks I rigged this battery tender connection. Mind you that there's no way I can get him to pop the hood. This has to be easy for him to connect.
  11. RockAuto has the A1 Cardone Part#20FLT1 for $1.52. That's quite a mark-up by Auto Zone.
  12. Why not tap the screw holes to clear the rust? You may have some dirt or rust on the mating surfaces of the hub and rotor, preventing a flush fit.
  13. Great news. I was surprised the pump would have failed so soon unless there was a major problem somewhere.
  14. Thanks, SK. I didn't have a ammeter at the time so I used a light bulb instead. Using a test light is standard procedure for us old school guys, but obviously not adequate for 21st century computer equipped cars.
  15. Whaddaya mean it went out again? Is it leaking? Hard to steer? Making noises? Do you suspect it was a faulty component or dirty screens that built up excess pressure?
  16. It's a '93 LS400 with Nakamichi remote CD changer in the trunk. Was testing for battery drain with ignition off. When I removed the negative battery terminal and put a test light in serial, the test light flashed while there was a clicking noise in the trunk. It was the CD changer. The clicking doesn't occur with the battery connected. For now I removed the CD cartridge, and wondering if the CD changer has been causing the battery to drain. But how to determine that?
  17. 98 LS, See the tutorials on the website produced by LexLs. The tutorials have great pics and everything. They apply to first gen ls400 though.
  18. Thanks for the replies. My guess is that Lexus wants the brakes to fail so they can charge thousands later for new calipers. Or maybe in NJ the cost of disposing the old fluid is a hassle. The brakes were last purged by a MA Lexus dealer at the 90k service. There's no record for power steering service. Nice tutorials. Rebuilding the original pump would be ideal.
  19. It's my dad's '93 LS400 (130,000 mi). He took it to the Lexus dealer for maintenance and asked to purge the brakes and power steering fluid. But the dealer said it wasn't necessary. I thought that was a good thing to do every 5 years. Also, they found a small leak in the power steering, and want mucho dinero to replace the pump and lines. Think the dealer will install after market parts if I buy them? Thanks.
  20. Nice job. Now if you can only put to rest the dispute as to which engines are interference vs. non-interference.
  21. Mucho gras for the constructive replies. Auto lights, remote keyless entry and ground are great suggestions. Maybe there are other automatic features that draw juice? Changing the battery every three years is a bit cautious, no?
  22. My dad's battery in his '93 LS400 goes dead after the car sits for a week or so and then it won't start. It has a 3 year old DieHard. Does the LS typically draw a substantial current when the ignition is off? Is there a specification on a typical current draw? Thanks.
  23. This may sound rediculous, but sometimes Marvel Mystery oil does wonders on valve taps and other engine noises. Had a nasty tick on my Caddy Northstar and a half quart of MMO really toned it down.
  24. Don't American made cars have a power window override where the driver can disable all the passenger windows? Even with the pull switch there's a chance of accident. The override is by far the best safety solution.
