  1. a decent spacer kit will come with longer wheel studs.
  2. Stock, otherwise the aftermarket perfromance pds will affect braking smoothness and delivery by grabbing harder and earlier. It wont hurt you too much no the track to use oem pads, but it will make your daily commute much easier. I use Brembo Blanks rotors and oem pads from my toyota dealer.
  3. Say I wanted to do these mods for a 96 SC400, what parts would I need? Hight, width and depth of fan? fan model if possible? That australian header, worth it? street legal? BFI, how easy is it to do? decent cat backs for sc400? What is the best chip? I heard Unichip was good, where would I get that? how long is the install? is it worth it? About how much would this cost just for parts? Thanks in advance.
  4. why not supercharge a sc400? dosent some austrialian company sell a kit good for either 400 or 500hp depending on the kit?
  5. you are supposed to put a ring of silicone around the head and another on the valve cover not just a small bead at the corners. You'll want to cover the most surface area with the silicone to prevent anything from getting out or in.
  6. The silicone can be found at any decent automotive store and its called silicone gasket sealer or something clsoe depending on brand. It's usally black and has a strong sour smell. Put a bead on both sides of any gasket when installing it.
  7. What I dont understand is why the guys say it's a pita and impossible to rebuild a motor. It's all basically the same. If you take the time labeling it with a dremel and some tape(depends on how many parts you ant to replace or keep) and make sure every part is in a labeled plastc baggie and you cau use your sink and 6 monthsof time, you could probably do it yourself.(may not be legal in any states due to waste disposal laws) I had a friend rebuild a 989 Porsche 911 motor like that(and yes it stil works), I'm sure the mechanic just dosent wan to put in the labor hours into it(takes a lot of time and he could make more money oing just about anything else) How much will it be for a motor installed with reasonable miles? you have a decently middle-sorta highish mileage lexus, but it should last to 150-200k miles easily if you take care of it. how much oil are you losing? if it;'s a very small amount, then it's hardly worth the effort andcan be attribuited to wear ad tear, if its more than a little bit(to the point you have to top off between oil changes) hen maybe a rebuild or replace is necessary.
  8. why scope when a leakdown takes 30 minutes and requires 0 effort? the average person wanted to they could probably do a leakdown test given the proper equipment and 10 minutes of instruction. A scope out of the cylinder seems like overkill. In fact a comp test and a leakdown test should be done first, not as a last resort. It would certainly cost less than removing a valve cover and scoping it out considering labor hours.
  9. What is up with Sc300/400 prices? KBB and Edmunds TMV seem pretty decently in line but NADA prices are like 50% higher! Also true steet value is nowhere near either. What is a good price on a 50k to ~80k car around 1996 for a sc400?
  10. After the sale, theyll want you to fill out their customer satisfaction survey. They take this seriously since I think Toyota only lets the higher rated dealers to become Lexus franchise dealers. Tell them you'll go in and do it, fill out all 0s or 1s and then write what a pita it was doing business there and the bad expreience you had with the sales rep(be sure to use detailed info as well as the sales rep's name). Then mail it. Oh yeah, what he's doing is borderline//mnaybe over borderline extortion threaten him about that.
  11. there are gaskets. As far as easy, maybe depends on how the hood area is stuffed/laid out. When ti comes down to it, unbolt the bolts, take off the gasket, put on new gasket, polish those dirty covers a bit and chekc the covers to make sure it's physiocally fine and then reinstall the covers and tighten bolts to specifications(alldata or service manual wil lgive you the proper torque specs). You dont realyl need to do the last step since as long as it;s tight and not insainely tight or loose, it'll be fine, but a service manual is useful as hell anyway. http://www2.lexpartsonline.com/parts/parts...ket+Set&dp=true you might need other things too. Remember, anywhere there is a fluid you need to keep in or out, there will be a gasket between metal on metal surfaces. How much is it leaking, if it's just a very minor leak, it's just wear and tear and you really dont need to replace the gaskets. The car should be fine. If you are losing oil noticibly and need refills between oil changes, that is casue for replacement.
