  1. Hi,

I have talked to you before, and you have been a great help. I hope you can offer some advice on a new project I am undertaking. I have a 1999 LS400 and am putting in a new after-market radio, buying it from Crutchfield. The radio is a Sony XAV-AX100, and the reason I chose it is it has Android Auto which allows me to use my phone  for hands free speaking and a lot of other things. Like you, I'm not going to use it for navigation, as I also have a garmin with its own back up camera. My Lexus is a Natamichi radio. My question is, is there still no wiring harness, and how can I incorporate the sub woofer and its amp which is located under the driver's seat. Would you recommend doing this myself or letting best buy install. Since this is a more complicated install, I don't want somebody else goofing it up. Also how do you release the upper vents. I did it once, but can't remember where the release is.

    Thanks for your help

    Bode

      Hi,

I didn't see this message earlier but I think I gave you all the information I had when I answered your post although I was in a hurry when I did that.

The Best Buy installer who did the Kenwood install for me was incredibly knowledgeable and I wondered why he was working at Best Buy although there had been lots of layoffs in the tech industry in this area around that time.  Do you have the Nakamichi system diagram?  If not, I can either send you one or provide you to a link to it or one I uploaded to the ClubLexus forum.

The Best Buy installer spent as much time fabricating the little interface harness as he did doing the actual installation.  I made it easier for him by removing the Nak head unit, wood console panel, air vents, etc. before I took the car to Best Buy.  The Kenwood had it's aux-in and USB/iPod ports on the back and extension cables were run through the console and up into the upper console tray.  I attached the cables to the upper console tray hinge with plastic cable ties.

The installer used lighted magnifying glasses like my dentist uses.  My vision is poor and I would have a heck of a time getting the pins he installed on the custom interface harness into the correct slots in the connector leading to the Nak amp.

I really liked that 2000 LS400 - maybe the 2nd favorite car I've ever owned after a Mercedes 450SEL in the 1970's.  I would have kept the 2000 LS400 longer if it had more up-to-date safety features like automatic emergency braking like we have on our Prius and Sienna.  We're getting old and need all the help we can get!

Good luck with your project.  Let me know if you have more questions.

      Jim
