I enjoy coming here to help others and to get help myself, but my main motivation is to try and build a knowledge base that we can all refer too. Thats why I like to add a lot of verbage to my replies in the hope that the thread search tool will pick up on them, sorry if you have to wade through the chaff.

I find the level of maturity around here a key ingredient of its success and have a had a few good bellyaches from laughing myself.

I hope you state side guys don't mind the rest of the world hijacking your board, but the level of activity is what draws the international crowd.

Yup, this thread was pretty heavy going at first so I guess we all had to lighten it up a bit.

I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome thanks to 26 years of gaming!

Plan on driving vehicle to work today and will reply with outcome at road speeds. So far the repair has cost me two beers. May have been a dirty OCV, stuck OCV or a bad harness connection.

Apparently the ECM can cope with this problem occasionally. To quote the DI-136 document

"DTC P1349 and P1354 are also output after the foreign object

is caught in some part of the system in the engine oil and the

system returns to normal in a short time. As ECM controls so

that foreign objects are ejected, there is no problem about VVT.

There is also no problem since the oil filter should get the foreign

object in the engine oil."

Hopefully that's all that happened in your case.

Good Morning: I am also looking for help on this P1349 Code> I have a 98LS 400 130K miles. Have you been able to solve the issue> I have taken mine to two mechanics, one is my local boy who likes to fix pick up trucks, the Lexus dealer charged me 100bucks to tell me nothing that I did not know. I cant believe I actually paid them. The dealer "thinks" it "might" be the V V T controller and says he has to take the engine apart to check it. He wants 1000 bucks to check his theory. I had the timing belt changed in Dec. 06 at 100K miles. One of my buddies is a mechanic for Toyota and will be coming over to help me out. Did you have any luck with the O sensor? That sounds like a easy and affordable option.

Unfortunately he had the code for the O2 sensor, whereas P1349 is purely the VVT on bank 1. So probably not a solution for you unless you also have P0135 showing.

Your buddy will be able to help out for sure, but he needs to log into the toyota tech service and download the diagnostics page DI-136 (which also contains reference to other pages). This will then give you the flow chart you need to work through the problem. It isn't too complicated but you need to follow the instructions. Or you can log in yourself as stated in my signature.

My interior trunk release on my 98 LS400 no longer functions> I can still use the remote on the key and of course the key works manually. I checked all the fuses and none of them appear to be bad. Any solutions would be cool. I had the car in the shop at the local dealer this week and when I left it for the day the counter expert said he could use the valet key to check it out. His outcome was he needed the main key to check the trunk

My $10 is on the valet "lock out". The master key can be used to enable the internal trunk release handle, just put the master key into the lock by the fuel flap release and make sure it is in the outermost position. To activate the valet "lock out" you just have to push the lock in, no key required. That is probably what has happened.

Dealer now has the car and says the throttle body needs replacement. What should I expect to pay for that :-?

Really? The throttle body needs replacing? What was the fault codes they read? It seems very strange, if by throttle body they mean the whole assembly. Can you ask them if its the entire assembly that needs replacing, if that's what they are proposing. It could be that the parts are only available as an assembly, much like the solenoid screen on the power steering where you have to buy the whole thing to replace a small part. Will be interested to find out what their diagnosis came up with, as I would think the throttle valve motor would be the first part to give out. I sure hope this isn't common.

Just so we are speaking the same lingo please find attached the exploded parts diagram.

I have been introduced to some people working over here in the UK who are producing a highly tuned version of the LS. I can't say much as I am under a non disclosure agreement, but they do have a minimalist website that has some pictures and info, which I thought might interest a few of you. Will update this post when I get word of something new.

I have heard birds before, especially when I first got the car as I was driving slowly to conserve gas. Going slow the ambient noise was actually audible. I couldn't believe it when it first happened. After that I started driving faster and now its all drowned out by an unrelenting wind roar.

I recently purchased an 01 LS430. It just rolled over 100,000 miles and the check engine light came on. I called the Toyota dealership and they said it's probably emmission related since the car is driving perfect. Is this typically the oxygen sensors for a car with 100K miles. Thanks.

Given the mass of the intake housing moulding I wouldn't be surprised if they found a few cracked on the early prototypes. That looks like a reinforcing plate for the mounting screws, taking the stress pinch points off the plastic (kind of defeats the purpose of a filter housing if its cracked!)

Seriously nice car, I think it works much better as an avatar picture than the ginger cat (does my memory serve me right on that one? Not that I have anything against cats, just prefer cars). I got a ride in one a few months back and its amazing how technology marches on, the thing stuck to the roundabout (funny thing we have over here) like glue and had some monster stomp in a straight line.

yes i am certain it is installed correctly. I serviced the rear end when i pulled it out to inspect for problems. I found nothin gout of the ordinary...

Is the duration around a second? Is it at a certain rpm? Under light throttle? My '92 does something similar once in a while, accelerating lightly at 1800 rpm going through 45mph. I have a badly leaking EGR pipe but other than that have not been able to determine what causes it. I cannot repeat it consistantly, which does not make diagnosis easy.

It's the valet feature to prevent unwanted access to all the valuables stored in the trunk. I used mine to best effect when I went camping at Le Mans last year and had all the valuables (beer mainly) locked away, but never lock your keys in there (which I have unfortunately done once, very very embarrassing).

Probably a stupid question....

I've got my eye on a nice 1991 steering wheel for $150. Will it fit the 92'? Are the first gen steering wheels pretty much interchangeable between each other? Any problems? Cruise lever? Airbag?

I don't know for sure, but I would expect them to be interchangeable. Are you familar with working with Airbags? If so great, ignore the following public safety anouncement. If not be extremely, extremely careful how you handle the thing and how you work. If one goes off prematurely the results can be devastating. Also you have to get the spiral cable aligned correctly.
