  1. Well I am getting ready to do an oil change on my 2002 ES300.  After surfing the net I ran across a discount auto parts place called Drivewire.com out of southern California.  They offer oil filters for the 1MZFE engine (1997-2001) for $2.71 each.  That sounds like a good price for an OEM oil filter.  Has anyone ever purchased anything from them?  Are the parts truly Lexus OEM or are they an inexpensive subsitute?  Just wanted to get an opinion from others who may have dealt with them.  Thanks.

I havent ordered from them yet myself but plan to they seem to have the best prices I have found plus have just about everything you need. The free shipping after $75.00 don't hurt either.

  2. Hi there, I'm about to purchase a 2000 RX300. The price was $21000 and 38000 ml on the car. Is it a good deal?  Can someone help to look up the Carfax please? Here the vin number - JT6HF10U1Y0163236.  Greatly appreciate for your help!

Punch up kbb.com go to trade in value and private party value put in mileage and good or fair condition and see what its worth in your are. IMHO I if you are buying from private owner I would go with a price somewhere between the two,but start out low enough you can always go up.

  3. I was reading alot yesterday on the internet and many forums were saying that the next ES will be the 350 with 280HP. Do you guys think that this accurate since the Toyota Avalon and the ES are similiar?

The real question is 'will Lexus learn how to make a car that shifts properly by then?"

Does every thread started about the future of the ES model have to be drug down into some debate about the transmission shift hesitation? Seriously, you do this all the time and its getting really old.

These comments have nothing to do with the thread, and any more off topic posting will be removed.

Anyways, I think its more than likely we'll see a change from ES330 to ES350 and very likely we'll see HP figures in that range. I also wouldn't be surprised by an AWD option.

While you're entitle to your opinion, I think it's worth not letting the issue drop. If people just accept an inferior product from Lexus, they'll continue to provide one. It's only by speaking up and letting Lexus know that it's unacceptable that it might get some attention. They need to know that I'll never buy another one until they fix the problem. Other readers might reconsider their purchase plans if they know about it. I'm sure that Lexus reads these boards. I think it's very dangerous to give them the opinion that an inferior product is acceptable.

And, yes, it's on topic in this thread since we're talking about a future vehicle - about the year that I'll be buying my next car. Their ability to address the transmission issue will determine wheter I'd buy one - or recommend one.

So your going to CHIME in at every point you can and try to discurage everyone from buying a lexus because you cant learn how to drive your car? This person asked a question in regaurds to horse power I beleive not how you feel about your car. Yes everyone is entiled to their opinion but you had your thread to express yourself now let others enjoy the fact that they are looking to purchase a new vehicle, and if you have information pertaining to their question please feel free to respond.

  4. Cool!  I need the front emblem and the ones for the hub caps.  How much?

Not a retailer , all are brand new and sealed.

It is old stock from a friends buisness who nolonger sells them. He used to supply all the Toronto area dealers with OEM emblems and completly plated and cleared for a protective finish then new 3m tape on the back.

I think this was a question!

  5. (Most of my professional career has been in water purification). It's actually not that simple. 'DI' and 'distilled' refer to the process used to purify the water. There's no guarantee that DI will have less TDS (dissolved solids) than distilled water. A poorly run DI system will have higher TDS than a poorly run distiller, for example. A well run conventional DI system should outperform a single stage distiller, but not a triple stage distiller. Then, of course, there are the DI systems used for things like water for injection (pharmaceuticals) and power plants (where impurity levels are measured in parts per billion or less).

Then there's the issue of 'good impurities' vs 'bad impurities'. Chlorides and low pH are almost always bad. But a moderate level of carbonate (especially with a slighly elevated pH) can help to reduce corrosion (very pure DI water can be extremely corrosive in some circumstances).

Bottom line is that for a car radiator, you're unlikely to see the difference between DI and distilled water. Either of them will have a low enough salt content that the difference won't matter - especially after adding the antifreeze which has corrosion inhibitors. For that matter, in many communities, the tap water is more than adequate (if the pH is > about 7.2, chlorides are low, and free chlorine is low).

true, but that is why I have a TDS meter unit and mine is running 000 TDS of the RO nevermind the DI since it is zero in.

The DI does have a shelf life and so does the RO. AS you stated a DI can be very poor, but so far in my short time of 12 years of doing a reef tank, distilled water has a lot of crap in it. That is me.

My little 5-stage RO/DI works just fine for my reef so I know the TDS, ALK, PH etc of the water coming out.

Do I want 35 ppm of TDS (junk) in distilled or 000 with RO/DI that I make? It is your call for yours but I know what I want. PLus the other things I test for show me what I have BEFORE I put in the chemicals. All the extra things WILL cause reactions in the chemicals in the coolant.

To close a RO/DI will perform better unless your "house keeping" skill are lacking.

MB your second person i saw today talking about their reef tank. If you dont mind can we get off the subject for awhile? How big is your tank and whats in it? I use to have a 120 gal reef tank and miss it alot, its better than tv thats for sure. Enjoy it ..

  6. I wouldn't re-use it. A gallon of anti-freeze is only a couple dollars & water varries between free & cheaper than dirt.

    http://www.mkiv.com/faq/faqtt.html#enginecooling6

good link but I must say I would take deionized water and currently use DI waster over distilled water in a heart beat.

Distilled can still have metals, salts etc (TDS) in them. If this was not true I would be using this water for my reef tank and no need a RO/DI filter.

So TOYS you use 15% to 85% ? Everyone in here always said 50/50. yes good article. thanks

You know I wish I was in your shoes, you complain and complain about your trany in your ES but your trade in value is unreal!!!! TRADE IT IN IF YOU DONT LIKE IT!!!I own a grand cherokee and it sucks ,but so does the trade in value. So I wish I had your lemon...

  8. Are these ads for the GS300s or any of them? I'm trying to sell my GS430 with 45K miles for $29K or less. KBB excellent value says $29K for my zip code. DH has found it for higher in other areas.

I am assuming its an 03? You never get excelent condition on a trade in and your car trade in is 26,000 so selling it at 29,000-29,5000 is right on the high end , but what I found as crazy is at a dealer kbb has it listed for 35,000 thats 9,000 more than trade in value that is insane. This is of course in the midwest.

  9. How much money would like to spend?

Many choices to choose from...... B)

Well I can get a pretty good discount from a friend of mine which I think is 10% over cost. So, I would like to stay under a $1,000 installed.

I guess you should be talking to your freind and see what he can get for you at 10% over he seems to be da man!!!If your talking chrome wheels and tires it aint going to happen under a grand thats for sure anywhere else anyway.

  10. "For most cars and most tires today, 34 PSI is a good general rule."

34PSI, is that on a cold tire? Thanks.

His question is regards to an oversised tire not the oem size guys. So if whatever your maxx is I would run 4-6 lbs below that and feel the ride it should be pretty good . I asked this question myself awhile ago.... good luck.

  11. What about snow tires.  Not so much for TRaction but stopping.  RX came with MICH tires.

First snow experience in RX seemed superior  in traction, control, and stopping than our rwd car.

Do you have a question here? If you like your tires and how they drive in winter conditions I wouldnt change a thing but in my opinion a winter tire' would' probably be even better.

  12. Let's take that as an example. A brand new ES can be purchased for $32 K or less. You save $9 K - by buying a car that has been driven 45,000 (well over half of the mileage I would use a car for) - and those are the best (lowest cost and newest) miles.  Plus, your car is 4 years old right off the bat, has a smaller engine than the new ones, and so on.

Personally, I don't think that's a great deal - and yours is one of the best CPO deals I've seen. The average CPO deal is much worse.

CPO or not, these cars bring top dollar in the used car market. I agree, if you have the $30k to spend, go for a new one. But those of us who only want to spend $20-$25k cannot afford a new one. Personally, I would rather have a car thats possibly a year older with a few more miles, and have it certified until 100k. Edmunds values for the '02 ES puts dealer retail at $24,000. Certified on edmunds is around $26,000. I think the point your missing is that these cars bring big bucks cpo or not. You should be glad that they are asking top dollar and can get it!

That's all true. But you're not going to get a 1 year old CPO for $20-25. Using Edmund's figures, a 4 year old CPO is $26 K - compared to $32 K for a new one (less if you're a good negotiator).

My question is - if the resale values are so great, why do the leases cost so much more than a comparable Volvo? A high resale value should mean a high residual - which SHOULD mean a low lease payment.

That is true.... I dont know what the final residual value is on a 3 yr lease thats a good question. You are also correct about the Those cpo's at 26,000 are top end also I wonder where they come down to normaly? If a guy has a es 300 02 and doesnt like his 18,000 trade in he might try to sell it himself for 20,000 or so . You could by this car with no warrenty like the old days would that be so bad to do? I guess its a matter of finances and what you are willing to pay for the security of a 3 yr warranty hey?

  13. If a tire is rated at 44PSI Max, then how much pressure should I put in? Thanks in advance.

The recommended pressure should be on a plate or sticker inside one of the doors or inside the glove box. That 55PSI Max, is just what it says. It's the maximum pressure you can safely put in the tire, but should only be used for carrying the maximum load for an extended time, at highway speeds. It's the pressure at which the max load printed on the tire is determined.

For most cars and most tires today, 34 PSI is a good general rule.

I agree but, as I have stated in the past, how does the sticker know what size tires you are running? The sticker is for stock tire sizes. What if you put vet tires on or bling bling ones with low profiles?????

I have asked this question already and the answer is go around 4-6 lbs below maxx and see how it rides and adjust accordingly. 5lbs below is what i would suggest myself.

That would be a horse of a different color. That's why I said "most cars and most tires." I'm sure one could consult with the tire company and/or find a chart of tire size vs car weight, and come up with a good place to start and then fine tune based on ride, handling, and possibly wear.

Info in this article should be of some help.

  14. This is going to be my first winter with my '01 GS430.  I kept the snow tires from my last car ('99 LS400) and want to put them on my Gs.  I've been told I shouldn't put them on due to the difference in size.  My Gs currently has 225/55/16's and the snows are 225/60/16's.  What are the detriments (if any) should I put the snows on?  Any information and/or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Put them on. They will be fine. That second number refers to profile (dist. from the outer edge of the wheel to the top of the tire) and it is just a little taller tire. There should be no reason you couldn't put those on.

Was that a tow truck driver or a tire salesman that said you SHOULDN'T put them on?

There is zero reason you shouldnt put them on..

  15. That is one of the better dealsI have seen. I agree spending 10 grand more and getting 4 year newer car with zero miles sounds to be more logical, if of course the person can afford it? Saving 10 grand and driving a es300 with 3 year full warrenty is still a nice thing. I just have not seen the 23,000 price being offered unless these 28,000 vehicles are going to come down to 23,000. Great piece of knowledge though about you only getting that deal on a trade in vehicle, cuz a 02 with 45,000 on a trade is worth....18grand.I am not sure what a lease is value is at the end of the by out offer.

Well, one thing you have to realize is that I had done previous business with this dealership and salesman (Helped a family member buy an LX470). They were originally asking between $25-26k for the car, and we worked down from there. It was definitely a huge blessing finding this car, because it had been taken better care of than any lease vehicle would have been. (Previous owner had ALL fluids flushed at least twice by 45k).

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of how leasing works can explain why the price for the lease turn-ins is higher. Just know that you should not expect to pay near what they are asking. If you can find an honest salesman, after a little bit of dealing you can kind of get a feel of what they have in it and what you can get it for. Good Luck.

Now 25-26,000 for a 02 with 45,000 is alot of cash. The 04's must be going for 3 grand less than new ones then? They sure hold there value, and yes it is a good thing if you own one and arent out looking for one.....lol If it was a normal car and I new trade in was 18,000 I would be trying to buy that car for 19-19,500 and thinking it was a fair deal. Without a warrenty of course.

  16. It's all about finding the right deal. We bought our '02 6 months ago. It had 45k miles on it and paid $23,000 incl. taxes(CPO from dealership). The odd thing was all the other CPO cars were lease turn ins and they wouldn't give us a good deal on any of those. The one that we got the best deal on was the same car as the others, the only difference was it was a trade-in and not a lease turn-in. The CPO warranty is almost exactly like the new car warranty, so you can bring it in for anything. Good Luck.

That is one of the better dealsI have seen. I agree spending 10 grand more and getting 4 year newer car with zero miles sounds to be more logical, if of course the person can afford it? Saving 10 grand and driving a es300 with 3 year full warrenty is still a nice thing. I just have not seen the 23,000 price being offered unless these 28,000 vehicles are going to come down to 23,000. 17. LEXUS  CPO  ,Is this a better idea than buying from private owner? What exactly are the benefits ,and would you purchase a new lexus or save $10,000.00 and get a 3 year old  cpo lexus? Just something i'm contiplating at this time ,and could use some other oppinions from lexus fans. I am looking at an  ES330 if that helps?

It's all a matter of personal opinion. Some people love CPO, but I think they're a lousy deal. You get a used car but it's very nearly as expensive as a new one. I would never spend the money on a newer CPO. You just don't save enough to make it worth while IMHO.

If you can save $10 K, it might be worth while, but I've never seen a CPO deal that good. First, figure that you can buy a new one for less than list. If you compare the car to the price on an identical new one, the CPI is rarely that great a deal.

I have read the trany thread wow!!!!!! that was crazy however I was feeling the cpo was a great thing but have to agree the prices for a 2003 and 2004 are $28,000 -%30,000 . This is far from trade in value of $20,000 and $23,000. I have no idea of course what price i would pay but it worth something for the peice of mind of 3 yr warrenty ,but i am looking at 23 yr old cars closer to 30,000 than 20,000 where I think they should be.

  18. I am looking at an  ES330 if that helps?

easy I would more then likely buy a CPO before new.

Good to know MB, what about a 2001 over a 2002 with the 5 sp overdrive?

  19. In 2004 the ES300 became the ES330 because the engine increased in size from a 3.0L to a 3.3L.  Body remained unchanged.  I think the only other amenitiy that was added was memory settings for the passenger seat (but that may not have been until 2005).

2005 saw a redesing of the grill, fog lights, headlights, wheels, taillights and color schemes interior and exterior.  I believe in 2005 the steering wheel controls for the audio system were finally implemented.

    steviej

Thankyou Stevie I appritiate that info..
