Are Autolite Iridium XP good plugs to use instead of NGK or Denso?
-
Check ALL vacuum hoses, one tiny air leak caused mine to act severely inconsistent in terms of everything you mentioned.

Strongly recommend replacing all your wires with decent quality ones!

Do you happen to have heavy key chain attached to your ignition key? (Is the key snug in ignition?) Triple check battery and terminals/wires. I've experienced both those.

1998 LS400 tail lamp failure displays/all bulbs replaced
Zeus253 replied to Zeus253's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
"RX400h" and Paulo, thank you all your information is greatly appreciated. RX..., yeah I have a 2004 Corvette also and the display for HVAC is extremely difficult to view (dimmed almost 100%). For the Lexus LS400 I haven't replaced the license plate lights or reverse yet. Didn't think those would apply to tail lamp failure. Also I believe I need to check the location of TLFS module in trunk area (not sure where that is). Previous owner did not bother to clean out trunk seal gutter so when I bought it water very easily could have drooled down into trunk inner sides behind carpet.- 5 replies

1998 LS400 changed all bulbs to correct wattage or nominally higher wattage (1-3 watt above stock) and even electro greased connections. Still getting "tail lamp failure" message BUT ONE INTERESTING NOTE IS THAT IT ONLY SHOWS MESSAGE WHEN GEAR SELECTOR MOVES OUT OF "PARK". WHY would Lexus not make it easy to just replace bulb and done? Is there an easy fix?

I agree with "Olygirl", if you're still under warranty or sven slightly out of warranty then best to not use regular. The cost difference isn't worth the risks. Almost seems the same as saying lower grade oil is ok to use all the time. In a hardship, it won't completely destroy but regular use of fluids not recommended is never a good idea. Full disclosure just my opinion based on learning the hard way. Hope the best for you.

Try checking air vacuum connections, particularly the EGR plastic box (odd shaped) and the connection where intake air comes to meet the manifold throttle body. For example, in my 98 LS400 one of the many times I removed the big black piece connecting to throttle body manifold (near center of engine bay) ; I didn't make the rubber and hose clamp perfectly 100% and I had random things happen very briefly and intermittently. These events were: VSC off warning light, check engine warning, randomized low acceleration power, and most importantly - extreme automatic transmission gear change. Hope this helps!

Best ride and performance would be to maintain as much sidewall as factory. For example instead of 65 series (second number on tires) try 50-55 but rim size needs to match that number in terms of overall height. When put together, the new rime plus the sidewall height would equal the same total height of factory height. A very small amount wider will definitely help for traction especially side action / cornering. This is my opinion based on my experience. The less sidewall the worse the ride in rough roads like city pot holes. (Full disclosure to check on safety first then look cool second. Follow all applicable regulations in your area)

I stand corrected from most recent post, OBD2 not on the 1992. Apologies

Much less likely to get shot due to reaching in glove box

For any necessary driver's/vehicle document if getting pulled over by law enforcement.

If you haven't already, I recommend connecting a professional level OBD2 scan/diagnostic because it may not show as driver information light warning. I found out that I had code that didn't show visually in dash. Also, if it's running weak and shifting irregular and forced into gears. Check vacuum from intake manifold to air intake including checking all plugs, check for anything inside of all intake plastic parts especially the EGR air resonator box (known for having defective thinner part on outlet/inlet. CHECK THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR!!! Hope the best.

Anyone know information about when a locksmith's key programming tool reads "unable to communicate". Fuses in engine bay checked already. Using a key that starts vehicle and opens all locks (glove, trunk) and their are NO current warning code lights in dash. Thank you

I am under the strong impression that if the key starts and does it all, rhat this is a master key.

I have the key on the right - it came with the car (starts vehicle and locks/unlocks everything). The one in my picture on bottom right is a compatible upgrade version (switchblade 4C type chip which is same as your L=transponder chip) to the OEM. From ebay showed as compatible.

Thank you Paulo but when it comes to the step 5 - removing existing preprogrammed key, the security light starts flashing before I can go to step 6.

Hello, I would like to know the official procedure to correctly program/add new transponder 4C chip key/FOB using the existing non-FOB plain key (current single key does unlock everything and start vehicle). Again this is for 1998 Lexus LS400. I have been successful in adding the 3 button FOB remote portion but not start the vehicle. First person that has a successful procedure for me gets a prize.

I found that it is a very good idea to change hose clamps from OEM to new type (flat head/hex bolt), wrapping with High Temperature Electrical tape, not to tighten with power especially at the end of tightening. Helps with life of the seal at inlets. For all other rubber hoses not replaced, recommend using (an approved for rubber) silicone lubricant to gently condition the hoses. Same stuff can be used to condition window/rubber track and door seals. Refer to use details on can. Last, even the smallest of air/vacuum leak will cause numerous issues including engine functioning, engine life, check engine lights, vsc off code, and more.

You could try these items: fuel stabilizer/treatment, changing/checking spark plugs, putting a tiny bit of oil at top of engine by using the oil filler hole (remove oil cap), run OBD diagnostics.

Broken Piece From The Air Intake Connector Pipe
Zeus253 replied to Gumart1's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I wonder if a snug rubber grommet and a snug hose connector fitting would work?
