I was doing some research on this topic.  I know a lot of you guys are into the TC but by having the TC don't you have to spend more $$$ to have a tranny cooler installed?  Also, isn't the TC only working up to a certain RPM.  By replacing the rear with higher gears wouldn't you achieve the same if not better off the line acceleration as the TC but throughout the whole RPM range?  Also, you wouldn't need to add a tranny cooler; am I correct?  What are the pros and cons for each for those of you that have installed either or both. Thanks.

    Do them both.A tranny cooler is cheap.Do you have any ideas of where your going to get gears?

    I believe RMM makes a perf. limited slip diff. w/3.71 gears. I think we have 3.25 gears stock or something like that. They want like $1600 for the setup though :angry: . I'm just to trying to understand something; I know by changing the rear (gears) will give you greater acceleration (.5 sec. off 0 - 60) but you will also ALWAYS be running at a higher RPM than stock. ie on the highway instead of 2500 RPM at 80mph you would probably be at 2900- 3000 RPM. Now what happens with a torque converter? Do your RPM's increase from stock at the same MPH (like the previous "highway" example?

  3. Hello fellas, I have a 2000 GS400.

    There have been plenty of exhaust questions on this site however, NONE of them really address which type of exhaust (cat-back or rear section) will add the most performance.

    Why is the Borla the ONLY exhaust that only has 1 muffler; is there a reason for this? I thought ALL dual exhausts (both cat-back and rear section) have 2 separate mufflers like the stock setup. What is the reason for Borla's one muffler; is it to keep exhaust back-pressure up in turn keeping low-end torque?

    I heard for a N/A engines you do NOT want a large exhaust pipe because it reduces back pressure and could make your car "feel" slower. In this case why wouldn't everyone replace their stock exhaust for one with smaller piping; creating lots of back pressure = better torque?

    Please help. I have read a lot of these posts and I think it sucks when people spend money on exhaust systems and feel their car is actually slower - what a waste. I think we all need some education on exhaust systems. Who will be the pro to help comment on this ONCE AND FOR ALL? Thanks; I know there are plenty of members out there that could shed some light on the subject.

    I just wanted you guys to know, which I'm sure a lot here might already. Do you know that the stock grille on the GS models 98 and up have chrome underneath the grey/black colored paint? The other day I noticed I was getting a lot of chip marks on my grille. When I looked closer it was chrome! I was planning on getting an aftermarket chrome grille anyway so I decided what the hell and took a razor blade to the whole thing. Needless to say it looks awesome, not a frickin' scratch on the chrome slats. After I took all the paint off I polished it up with some Mothers Chrome Polish. It looks so good, I already got a lot of compliments on it; still stock but gives it a little extra look and stands out from an ordinary stock GS.

    Also, next topic, I have two 12" Rockford Fosgate HX2 subs in a seal box. The box took up so much trunk space, in other words I had NO TRUNK, literally. I didn't want to get rid of the system because it was so sweet. Anyway, I spoke with a rep. from a local car audio store and he told me that you need roughly 1 CuFt. of box space per 12" sub. I calculated that I had about 3.2 CuFt in my box; so I decided to cut it down so I could fit it all the way in that little area in the back of the trunk. It took me a couple of hours and it fits great and best of all, I have my entire trunk to utilize (and I also lost some weight)! Now I have about 2.15 CuFt. of box space, the dimensions are as follows. 14" high, 30" long, 13" deep (at the base) and 9" deep (at the top). It is trapezoidal in shape to fit to the angle of the back of the rear seats.

    Now, I just have a quick question. How do I know if my stock door speakers are still being amped by the stock amp without having to trace wires everywhere? Every since I took my stock sub out (because it was hanging down too low where I wanted to put my box) my door speakers don't sound loud like they used to - actually ever since I got my Kenwood amp for the box I felt that my door speakers are less powerful. I have a toggle switch mounted under my dash to turn the amp off when ever I want - when I do this the stock door speakers are very quiet. Did they do something OR have to take something out when they were hooking my amp wires (RCA's) to my stock deck? Please help. Sorry for the long post - I thought the other two things might have been helpful to the Lexus owners. :)

  5. How Do you remove the rear speaker (stock subwoofer) from the rear deck lid from a 2000 GS400? I just built a custom box with two 12" Rockford HX2's to fit the little area in the back of the trunk. The only problem is that the box is 15" tall; the height by that little space is only 13.25" because of the stock speaker hanging down - it must be removed; I will get another 3" of clearance. Please help!!!

  6. Thanks for all the help guys, by the way is the Tanabe real loud and is there "droning" at low constant RPM's? I might look into the Tanabe. Any input on this exhaust would be great!

    Oh yeah, I was thinking, is their ANY difference at all with regards to low end torque (acceleration) in a cat-back exhaust from just a rear section exhaust. In other words which exhaust would affect the low end torque the most. I'm guessing the cat-back, is this correct?

  7. Hello guys,

    New guy here from NY with 2000 GS4. I am looking for a couple of exhausts for my ride. I read a couple of threads with regards to this. I was wondering, why at some websites they say Borlas are cat back, they are not, it is only a rear section and why would you go from a stock true dual exhaust to one that is split at the end with one muffler? Not critisizing it's a very nice looking exhaust.

    Also, I was thinking about either an Apexi WS2, L-tuned or Tanabe; can anyone tell me if these all would fit no problem with a stock rear apron and bumper? If so do they stick out a lot or at all? Which are the louder of the bunch?

    Sorry for all the questions but I wanted to get a true cat back exhaust that would fit my stock rear apron (Exhaust cut outs) and still be pretty flush with the bumper. Thanks for all the advise in advance - you guys know your sh$t. Oh yeah, by the way does anyone have a RMM exhaust?
