Lug nuts vs wheel design

Hi all, just joined and new Lexus owner.

Amazed I was, when I tried to take a wheel off.

I have 3 different wrenches which seem the right size, one came with the car, one was a multi lug wrench from my old car, and a socket wrench.

However, ALL of them just seemed to strip the nuts

because the wheel didnt leave enough room to get the

socket deep enough around the lug nut to apply the force necessary.

This is very unsafe, if we have a flat out on the road, we are stuck.

So my only thought is to buy a new set of lug nuts with the taller size

socket grip area. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you solve it?

I keep a socket of the correct size and a 1/2" drive breaker bar for leg power. Then switch to a 1/2" ratchet to finish the job. 

Don't forget they come with a special lug nut to thwart kleptos from steeling your wheels. Don't lose that thing.

I bot a complete set of toyota Highlander lugs from a parts yard, and threw the locking nuts away. The Highlander nuts are longer and look very nice. I don't regret not having to deal with those lockers a bit.

BTW keyed lug nuts do nothing to thwart any modestly skilled dirt bag from getting the wheels.  I can get those off with no problem and I dont do it for a living...
