i believe my transmission is out on my 1996 Ls400 i have the back off the ground goes in reverse but when in drive itll go sometimes till a certant rpm so im sure it needs replaced

sounds like the internal clutch plates / bands have burnt out .... if so, the fluid will smell of burnt toast and be a brown colour instead of red

Check the fluid level. Like trevor said, does it smell burnt? i would do a flush of the fluid before I settle on the transmission being bad. How many mile on the car?
