Console Lights On 99 Rx300

My wife has a 99 RX300 and the console lights are out for the better part of the day. Using the switch to brighten the lights does nothing to change it...however the odd thing is that sporadically during the daylight hours it will work for a short period and of course at night with the headlights on it does work more often than not. Has anyone experienced this issue and can you direct me to the root cause. Any and all help is appreciated.

Which console lights are you talking about? Are you referring to the gauge cluster illumination? The center console blue LCD info screen? The green lights that illuminate the radio button icons? Etc?
