The infamous Check Engine Light....what the heck does it really mean?

This article by CarMd list the reasons in order of frequency from 1996, to 2010. For example, in 1996 to 2009 the "loose gas cap" was the number one reason/code for the CEL to come on. Starting in 2010, the O2 sensor became the No.1 reason.
