One Speaker Out.

Heyyy.

I have a 91 Ls400 that was actually given to me (for free) from a friend who was trying to get rid of it. I love it, and I'm really excited about fixing some of it's flaws. So here's one that's bugging me right now.

The factory speakers sound pretty good. I actually bought a pair that I thought were decent replacements and I put one in but the old ones sounded better. My problem is that the speaker in the back left hand side is not working. I can play with the sound placement on the stereo and manipulate it so that the sound would only be coming out of the back left one, but no sound comes out.

I've just taken the speaker out of the speaker box in the door and checked the connections to the speaker itself and it was fine.

So my question is, what are the other possible causes besides the speaker being blown out (although it looks as if it is intact)?

Does your car have the Nakamichi system? When I bought my 92 w/Nak, the front mids didn't work at all- the sub and front tweeters were fine, and the back door speakers worked but one was most of the way to blown. I replaced all the door speakers in December (thanks Mom and Dad!!), and it now sounds great- as I understand it, the door speakers in the Nak systems eventually stop putting out sound...so your speakers may need to be replaced

p.s. I used JBL PowerSeries 4 inchers and they sound fine

No, it's not Nakamichi. All of the speakers are pioneer.

I guess I'll just get the back speakers, if not all, replaced then thanks.

You could probably get away with replacing the back doors if the fronts work fine- the reason I replaced all of mine is that only one worked correctly- I thinking about cleaning connnections stuff like that, but since taking the door panels off was such a pain (I doubt they had ever been off.....), I went ahead and replaced them.

My '93 LS400 did. When it started beeping every 15 seconds

and wouldn't shut off, I pulled the fuse. I then lost my left

rear speaker. Seems that the phone uses that speaker.

I had to go into the trunk and deinstall the phone in order to

not have the beep and still have all the speakers.

Deinstallation was pretty straight forward, once I located

the phone system and figured out how the connector

set up worked.

Now, from my flaky memory:

Finding the phone - In the trunk drivers side, toward the

front. Have to pull the side panel.

The connector - The input connector to the phone box is

identical to the box's output connector. Simply unplug

the box and plug the input cable into where the box's

cable went. Cheap graphic:

Before: CableA >Box> Cable B

After: CableA > Cable B

Yes the speaker wiring for that speaker routes from the amp into the phone transciever and then out again to the speaker. If something goes awry inside the phone and the relay gets stuck in the wrong position it could just disconnect your speaker and connect it to the (now dead) phone amp. Or something could have gotten disconnected somewhere...

Removing it from the circuit should restore the speaker...and save the connectors they are hard to find JIC you want to wire in your own solution later.

For what its worth, I have a 93 ls and the exact same problem. For me it wasnt the speaker/s at all. It might have to do with the phone amp but I removed my phone and it didnt help. I believe it is a break/bad connection under the seat or at the driver kick panel. I fixed it by running a new piece of cable to the speaker conn behind the seatbelt cover on the driver side, under the door sill cover, behind the kick panel and up to the stereo. I just used a cheap speaker and wire to find the correct output from the stereo and soldered aand sealed all connects. Its a pretty easy job and the speaker has been working perfectly for 6 months. Hmm, sounds like it may have been tied to the phone.

Running separate wires directly from the stereo is certainly

a permanent solution.

However, if the problem is because of the phone, bypassing the

box by connecting the input/output cables together is a lot less

work.

To access the phone, do you have to unscrew anything to remove the panel? or does it simply pop off.

I was trying to look at it yesterday but I couldn't figure it out.

Ohh, geez, relying on my random access memory again...

OK, I think...

The tool box needs to be unscrewed, the panel can then be unclipped.

If that doesn't do it, I'll need to go back in and check it myself.

get a speaker you know that works. Run the wires on the speaker that doesn't work to the speaker that you know works. Does it work?
