I have a 93 es300 and the check engine light came on last week. I have already tightened the gas cap hoping this would be it, but unfortunatley it was not. I stopped by AutoZone to get the computer read for free but they say they can only check 96 or later models. Lexus wants to charge me $85 for a diagnostic test. Does anyone know of any options I may have that are less expensive than the dealer? Please help....

try another store

you need an obd 1 code reader

most shops have them

of go to a small independent and tehy might read it for $20

the 97 and ups are obd 2

but the es started the obd 2 codes in there redesigned 94 engine

You can read it easily. Open the diagnostic box. Short E1 and TE1 (?) with key "on". Read the blinking of check engine light.

1st Number of blinking is 1st digit of code, 2nd number of blinking is 2nd digit of code.

Fixing is another problem

that is the other way to do it

it is much simpler as for not needing toold

but i am not sure if i would recommend an average user to start shorting pins to an ecu

incase tehy get the wrong ones
