Reverse Instrument Light On When Pressing Brake

PAL

Recommended Posts

Recently this started to happen on my 93 LS400 at about 270k. When driving, if I hit the brake paddle, reverse light comes on and overdrive goes off. Appears to be a wiring short from brake to reverse switch. Reverse indication might be kicking off the over drive which may be a function of the computer. Anyone knows anything about this kind of problem?

For now, I am driving with overdrive off in local traffic etc. I am hoping to know better before I go for repairs so as to save some costs. Thanks.

My 90 Ls 400 w/ 233k has (had) similar problem. The problem is in the cluster of wires that run along the left trunk hinge. these wires get all bent up and either break or short out. for me , i just straightened out the kink and wrapped the cluster with a ton of electrical tape enough to supply some more torsional rigidity.

i later thought to wrap the kink in corrugated cardboard and then with tape to really inhibit the damage inflicted by the trunk hinge to these wires, but have not experienced the problem since.... if i were you i would carefully assess the situation before doing any wrapping to make sure there are no broken or bear wires that need repair. good luck!

Thank you Otto and the other gentleman. You were exactly right, I found a white wire completely broken off after hitting the sharp edge on the plastic wire holder mounted to trunk hinge (what was supposed to protect it.) every time the trunk was opened/closed. I stripped back the two ends of white wire and connected together, my car is back to normal now. I wrapped enough tape to make it somewhat solid.

I suggest everyone should inspect this area to avoid problem.
