I have been struggling to replace timing belt in my 91 LS400.

When I finished the job and I was pretty confident that I had done

a good job, but ... the timing was not right and car was moving

fairly ok but gear change was not smooth.

After three trial I made the timing good.

Car runs smooth.

But, alas, rear gear and neutral both move the car forward.

In Drive, the car runs smooth and everything OK.

Did I break the transmission? Any one can help me?

Interesting.

Have you tried every shift position(3,2,1,)? If so, are they appropriate?

Over drive off works, 2, 1 are working good!!!

i cant see how changing the timing belt could mess up the tranny. the timing belt rotates the engine internals. the only thing i could think of would be that you might have messed up some tranny cables while working under the hood. but really there's only the throttle cable and tranny cooling lines. this is a tuffy. i'd recheck the timing (belt marks, crank mark, tensioner) if all else fails.
