Sc300 Clunk Noise

Recommended Posts

I have a 1996 SC300. When I pull away from the stop sign and then have to slow and stop for a signal light half block away I hear a "clunk" noise when I let off the gas pedal before I apply the brakes.

Also the overall ride does not feel "tight" going over small ridges in the road or a small type pot hole it sounds and feels like I am riding on rims rather than tires.

Being a woman mechanics agree with what I say but then say they can't find anything wrong. I know there is something wrong because when I first bought the car it didn't do this.

Hi LexyPam,

how many miles is your SC300? Do you also hear the clunk noise when you brake while reversing or when you make a turn. If so, then it could possibly be that your lower control arm (LCA) rubber bushings need to be replaced like I had to replace the ones on my 92 SC400 at 170K miles. Check out some of the postings or threads in the suspension area concerning lower control arm bushings for more info.

If you're experiencing any excessive vibrations too, when you release your foot from the gas you might want to have checked your driveshaft bushings (front & rear) and your transmission mount (also some problems I had to deal with just recently. With mileage over 100K and with the extreme hot & cold weather conditions in Fresno those easily increase factors for bushing deterioration.

Hope that helps.

I had the same problem, if is hasn't already been said its usually the Front Lower Controll arm bushing(rear is the worst and makes the clunking.) I replaced mine with after market and my clunking is gone. My SC300 has 240,000 on it and the articles I've read said that its the most common thing on SC's and can happen as soon as 40-80,000 miles.
