What Is Trick To Putting Shift Knob Back On

Hi I lost one of the shift knob screws (the two that are behind the little tabs on it). Searched forum and someone else did exact same thing! It fell into the wires. Now I only have one and I can't get the shifter to work right.

I put the screw on and then I can't press the button, or I put the screw and I can't let go of the button. Is there some trick, does it have to be in certain position? Like D or R or N?

Or do I need both screws for it to work? Thanks!

Got an update

I found a screw that matches and was very happy, but I still can't get the gear shifter to work as before.

The release button on the side of it still either stays locked when I screw it on or stays pushed in, I can't figure out at what level the white locker mechanism inside needs to be. Tried 10000 different variations though.
