Problem Accelerating

I have to step hard on the accelerator before the car can move forward. Mechanic advised me to start off with L then move on the 2nd before going to D. Does this makes sense to anyone. My 1993 Lexus ES300 is automatic and find it strange that I have to drive it like it is manual. Appreciate your adv. Tks

Need more info.

do the rpms fly up when you hit the gas but it goes no where?

Or do you press the gas and the car drives slowly

is there a certain

temp

speed

rpm

or any other specific environment that happens at the same time?

You need to find out if it's an engine, or transmission problem.

He's thinking your out a shift solenoid, or shift logic. It sounds ot me like you've either lost shift solenoids - which would give you a flashing O/D light because the ECU would have stored a trouble code, or you're transmission is slipping. If it's slipping, it's destroyed & you need to rebuild it. If it's not slipping, you need to drive it very carefully so you don't completely wear out whatever clutch you're using on whatever gear you have left.

Here is the 3vz-fe chart of shift solenoids 1 & 2, VS gear positions & what happens when you drop a solenoid:

Looks concieveable to me you've lost the #1 shift solenoid.

How many gear changes do you count doing a full throttle accelleration until you hit 70mph?

Thanks for your quick responses.

The temp was normal at the lower 2nd line on the gauge

From 0-35mph, the rpm was 2250 and 36 mph and above it dropped to 2000

Toysrme, mechanic checked my transmission and said it is good. He changed a solenoid cos he said the computer kept pointing to a solenoid problem. This still cant stop the O/D OFF light from blinking How many solenoids are there? The thing is if I follow my mechanic's adv, ie, go from L to 2 to D, the car drives well but my concern is if something else will break down. There are 3 gear changes as I go full acceleration to 70 mph.

HELP!! Bought the car 3 months ago for $3500 and it had 127k miles. I have since put in $1500 on repairs plus 4 new tires. Had intention of keeping the car for 3 years at least. Why dont I buy a newer car? I would if I have the $ :)

i have had this problem in my 93 es300 (slow acceleration, and your blinking o/d light...the diagnosis i had received was right after i had repaired my transmission... i was told that there are two speed sensors..and the one that was broken in my case was the one that was in the transmission.... bring this to your mechanic or trany specialist.. and please post if it worked
