It sounds like you’ve got a well-maintained Lexus GX470 with a lot of life left in it! The “strawberry milkshake” issue you mentioned is a common problem when transmission fluid mixes with coolant, often due to a failed radiator. Replacing the radiator and flushing both the coolant and transmission systems are crucial steps to address this issue.

Given that the transmission is shifting hard but not all the time, it’s possible that the contamination hasn’t caused severe damage yet. However, it’s important to monitor the transmission closely after the repairs. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Transmission Fluid: Ensure the transmission fluid is clean and at the correct level. Contaminated fluid can cause shifting issues.
  2. Transmission Filter: Replace the transmission filter if it hasn’t been done recently.
  3. Professional Inspection: Have a transmission specialist inspect the transmission for any signs of damage or wear.

The A750F transmission in the GX470 is generally reliable, with a lifespan of around 250,000-280,000 miles if well-maintained. Since your vehicle has been well cared for, there’s a good chance the transmission will survive, especially with the preventive measures you’re taking.

Keep an eye on the transmission’s performance after the repairs. If you notice persistent issues, it might be worth having a professional diagnose it further. Overall, it sounds like you got a good deal on a solid vehicle!

Coolant will destroy transmission clutch packs in little time, hopefully you got lucky.
