  1. The other day the BRAKE light came on at a traffic light. I accelerated and the light went off. I had the brakes checked only a few thousand miles ago and the pads were OK.

Light came on again today and then went off again as I was driving. Its not on constantly, just once in a while. I drive about 250 miles a week so it a little concerning. Any thoughts? Sensor wire perhaps? Does my 94 have sensors on all (4) wheels? If not..which ones? Thanks in advance. You guys are great when it comes to diagnosing problems.

No trips to the dealer is just fine with me.

  2. Does anyone know of a reasonable paint shop that can paint the lower half (bumpers down) in the greater Ft Lauderdale area? The upper half is perfect having been garaged most of its life. I believe the lower half was compounded by someone that did not know what they were doing. Multiple buff and wheel marks. Not that noticeable to the average person, but to the detail guy I am, its bad. Thank you in advance.

  3. There is a filter, and it sits just above the pan. It's easy to replace and you'll do a good 50% fluid change in the process. Most new filters come with a gasket for the pan too.

I called the local Toyota dealer and the service advisor said there is "no filter to change. It's a metal screen." They said $69 for drain and add. Does my 94 LS400 really have a replacement filter? Is he mistaken?

  4. The transmission is working perfectly. Shifts smoothly no problems. I'm just doing preventative maintenance as I do not know all of the service that was done to the car prior to my ownership last year. This car was always garaged by a non smoker and extremely well maintained. I am assuming that all service was done when needed. Lexus service book is complete up to 50K (has 80K now). Is transmission service recommended at any mileage interval? I read from these posts that the engine and trans are pretty durable. I just want to do my part.

  5. I had my car at Jiffy Lube the other day and of course they were recommending a transmission flush w/o a filter. The "technician" said its a metal screen and it requires no replacement. Is this correct? I really want this car with only 90K miles to be around for a number of years so I don't mind the preventative maintenance. Should I use the synthetic fluid or go with the OEM stuff?

  6. I need replacement keys for my 94 LS 400. I checked Sewell's and a pair of keys are available for $278.00. I saw some used keys on ebay for under $50. All I need is the case after the friendly guy at Advanced Auto (while changing batteries) cracked the cases. Any constructive comments on doing this? Sounds like a good idea.

  7. The other day when I got home I stopped the car and after putting the trans in park, shut down the engine. A "beeping" sound went off for about 5 seconds while the key was in the ignition. I'm sure this is something simple like..... I left something on and its reminding me to do something. A little help in this matter from you experienced Lexus people.

  8. The "check engine light" is a known flaw that occurs when the battery is disconnected. There are tutorials on this website how to fix it. Lexls.com, I believe, is a great source. There is nothing wrong with your engine. But it's such a PIA to get the light off, I simply put black tape over the light.

I mean, the car is older than my cousins. Which means that they're as big a maintenance PIA as my 94LS. But I love my cousins, and love my old Lexus...

Carefully use a test light on your cig lighter, or a multimeter and check for voltage. ground onto the ring, and poke the centre at the bottom, try not to bridge them or you will need to buy another fuse. If the voltage is there, then get a new lighter plug. If not, then check wiring. if it is all rusty and nasty insde, then you might need to buy a cig lighter socket replacement.

You can also try swtitching lighters between the back and front lighters, and see if the problem chases the plug, or the socket.

The cigarette lighter is "as new" since it's a non smoker's car. If the front lighter is out will that cause the rear one to go out also? Seems like they would be in tandem.

  9. The fuse that will have blown is in the drivers side fuse panel Fuse # 5 rated at 15A ( should be 2nd row from the left middle) this fuse also protects the SRS ( airbag) amongst others which is probably why your airbag light is also on.

If after replacing the fuse the airbag light is still on here is the reset proceedure.

    Steve2006:

Thanks for the detailed info & pictures to clear the air bag light. I replaced the fuse for the cigarette lighter, but the lighter still does not work. I checked the fuse again and it's OK. Any suggestions.

  10. Hey guys (and girls).. I'm not trying to "pimp my ride". I don't want 22" rims. I just want a nice factory looking 16" chrome wheel. I have a fairly new set of Michelins and I don't want to get rid of them. Chrome tint.. I think not. In Florida you can squeeze by with 20% tint. Highway patrol is always looking for the 5% stuff or limo tint. 20% works for me.

Thanks for all of your assistance. Nice to be a member. You guys rock!

  11. I recently purchased (Dec 2008) a preowned 1994 LS with only 80K miles. I searched for 6 months on Ebay only find this beauty 5 miles from my home. I took the car to Sears for a new battery and after leaving I noticed the air bag light was on as well as the "light" icon. I noticed a dime had fallen into the never used cigarette lighter (used for Garmin only). Both cigarette lighters are not working. I checked the fuses under the hood and found no bad ones. As far as the dash lights go is there a reset for the computer that a consumer can do (I'm pretty handy) or is this a dealer trip? The cigarette lighters seem to be controlled by another source (the dime has been removed). Any assistance would be appreciated as I like my cars to be 100% functional. This is a great car and I plan on enjoying it for years to come as I only average about 11,000 miles per year. Thank you in advance for your time to respond.
