I'm also looking to replace the factory radio on my 1997 ES300. I was looking at a single DIN unit though. Connecting my iPod is important to me so I've been looking at the Alpine CDA-9884 or CDA-9886. I am thinking about mounting using a double DIN mounting kit like this one. I like the idea of the extra storage underneath the radio.
I'm wondering what led you to the double DIN Pioneer? It does look great but was wondering if you've seen a single DIN in an ES300 and didn't like it? I have seen some that just don't look "right" - round peg square peg kinda look.
I think the mounting kit and Apline will look OK. I think I'll go ahead and order everything this week and will post some pics of how it turns out.
