  1. Thought I would bump this up....I will post the 2009 - 2010 ratings once I have them (they should come out around mid October)....but for those who are considering winter rubber (especially Canadian members), many places sold out early across the country in the fall of 2008 because of the new winter tire laws in Quebec......as I write this, the tire makers are producing their winter rubber & to avoid any issues, I highly suggest getting yours by the early fall.

OMG! Bren. I am peeling like a moulting snake due to a sunburn, just got back from NYC with 85° weather and come home to you bumping a thread promoting snow tires. ARE YOU CRAZY MAN!!! let me finish the summer. :P

  2. I have a 2001 Lexus ES300 with both the Check Engine Light and Trac Light on. AutoZone analysis showed code P1135 Air/Fuel sensor heater circuit malfunction. I replaced the oxygen sensor, Bank 1, Senor 1, by the radiator easily. That did not solve the problem.

That is because the bank by the radiator ir Bank 2. see my previous post.

I tried to replace, Bank 1, Senor 2, between the firewall and engine, on the exhaust manifold. That sensor was frozen in place, seized, and could not be removed.

If it is before the cat, that would be Sensor 1. Sensor 2 is down under the vehicle after the catalytic converter.

I went to the Lexus dealer initially and they wanted $ 162. for analysis, $ 214. for the part, and $ 216. for labor. I have 80,800 miles on the car.

Please tell me how you think I should proceed?

    Thanks,

    Michael A. Miller

If you put several applications of liquid wrench on the sensor right by the threads and let it soak in over a few minutes then walk away. come back in about 30 minutes. Use a long breaker bar or put some kind of extension on your socket wrench handle leverage should get it free.

  3. Hi guys,

How do I turn off the maintenance required light on GS430 2006? Help is much appreciated!

    Thanks

Is this the Check Engine Light or the Oil Maint. Required Soon light?

If it is the oil light,

    DON'T step on the brake.

now, open the accessory control panel door. Make sure you odometer is displaying total miles (not trip A or B ).

press and hold the reset button. Simultaneously press the engine start key two times (DO NOT have your foot on the brake as you do not want to start the car). You will see the words Oil Maint. Reset. Keep you finger on the reset button until these words go away. Then take your finger off the button and press the engine start button one more time to put the ignition in the off position.

Now start the car like you would to see if you reset was successful.

  4. as the commercial says, "tell the dealer to show you the carfax"

agreed. having other members look up carfax information is frowned upon. It is a disservice to Carfax. The dealer should be able to provide this upon request anyway. If they don't, don't buy or get them to go lower on the price.

  5. if you can do it yourself and you know what your are doing, then this is a no brainer.

I will be doing my own in the next couple of weeks. I am just trying to figure if I am going to get new shims, new brake kit and new stainless steel lines.

I don't do anything small. The other side of me says replace the pads with Ake's or Hawks and just cut the rotors.

It is not uncommon for me to argue with myself.

Turns out I only needed to replace the pads. Shims, lines and rotors were fine. However, 500 miles into a set of Hawk Performance Ceraminc Pads and I absolutely hate them. The give off more dust than a BMW or MB. Totally unacceptable for the price I paid. I am working with Tirerack to replace with Akebono ProACT ceramics or get a refund and just go back to stock.

  6. Just wondering how many miles you have on your GS?! And shouldn't Lexus have replaced the mirror anyways since theirs a TSB out for it?!

    -Bryce

When I had this done, it was at 49,800 give or take 10 miles. That is what is so funny. Had I waited until the mileage went over 50k, they would not have covered it. The TSB has been out since November of 2007. It was not until May 2009 that I decided to take it in. I have ontly had the car since May 2008, but have noticed the mirror vibration but attributed it to the amount of bass I like.

Just because there is a TSB, does not automatically mean the service or part is covered. If the car is under warranty, then it is covered. If the car is out of warranty, other factors have to be taken into consideration if a dealership is going to cover the work. For example, if the TSB is new for an older car, then they may cover it. If the TSB is old for a not so new car then they are not required to cover the parts or service.

Don't confuse TSBs with safety recalls. Recalls are usually covered in full at any time.

  7. The number listed under the Toyota name (85967 51020) lists here as

    8596751020 MSRP $983.80 Price $836.23

Front lamps - Headlamp components - Computer

    Computer Back - Us built W/hid, w/adaptive lighting 2004 - 2009

However, the ES is not a US built car so that is contradictory.

The 03 ES does not have adaptive lighting either.

On the plus side, the 03ES, if it has HID does use the D2R bulb which is listed on the left side of the sticket next to the triangle symbol.

If you search this same website under a 2003 ES for the same part you are directed here.

Seems to be a major price difference in the part you bought.

  8. I put the ramps on the apron of the driveway where it slopes down at a greater angle than the rest of the driveway allowing me to drive up on them.

That's kinda how I get my motorcycle on the back of the truck when I am alone. If I face the truck the right way and put the ramps off the tailgate, it is just a shallow incline that I can walk the bike up easily.

great minds think alike or necessity is the mother of ingenuity.

  9. A friend of mine had this problem and he would put a three foot section of a 2x10 inch board just before the each ramp.

He would drive up on the boards then up on the ramps. This was enough height increase for the lower edge of the bumper to clear the ramp by the time the wheels would start to climb it. The boards changed the angle of approach of the car so that the lower edge of the bumper was higher than when all four wheels were on the ground. Try that.

  11. Denso had a rash of AF sensors that were not very reliable. They were crap our short of 50k miles. These were seen alot in the 2002/2003 V6 used in the ES, RX, Avalon, Camry and other Toyo vehicles. Many people complained but Toyota did not do much except replace them under warranty. If you were out of warranty, then you paid. Supposedly they sensors have been improved and are more reliable.

That being said, I had one AF sensor go at 39k miles and one go at 58k miles on my 02 ES. My 06 GS has yet to throw a sensor and I am at 52k miles.

I sold my 02 ES with 108k miles on it and the O2 sensors in the it were still the original.
